INNISFIL, ON — When the gate started rolling before Race 6 at Georgian Downs on Saturday night, the seven freshman pacing fillies lined up behind it looked every inch the beginners they are. However, seconds later the fillies had shed their first start butterflies and were roaring into the first turn like a group of seasoned veterans.
Leaving from Post 5 veteran trainer-driver Carl Jamieson quickly sent Lucys Fame after the lead and the filly easily swept the field of Trillium Series competitors to a :28.2 opening quarter. Heading toward the half driver Paul Mackenzie moved Lucky In Lust off the rails and started up the outside like they had done it a million times, applying pressure to Pocketfulastarlite and Lucys Fame as the fillies rolled by the :59.3 half.
At the 1:28.4 three-quarters Jamieson and Lucys Fame were still comfortably on top by one and a quarter lengths and the filly had yet to reach top speed. With a :28.3 final quarter the Apaches Fame daughter simply powered away from the field to a seven length victory in an impressive 1:57.2.
Pocketfulastarlite picked up the runner-up’s share of the $80,531 purse, while Lucky In Lust survived the tough outside trip to finish third for Aurora owner Edward James.
Jamieson shares ownership on Lucys Fame with Glengate Farms of Campbellville and Karl Ungerman of Toronto. The trio acquired the filly for a measly $7,500 at last fall’s Canadian Classic Yearling Sale and in one start have recouped $40,265.
The filly came into Saturday’s Trillium event off an equally impressive 1:58.4 qualifying win at Mohawk Racetrack on June 14. That effort caused Georgian Downs fans to send Lucys Fame and her entrymate Tymal Mercedes off as the favourites so the filly returned just $3.80 to win, $2.30 to show and $2.10 to place. Third choice Pocketfulastarlite paid $5.10 and $2.40 for her runner-up effort and second choice Lucky In Lust returned $2.10 to show. The 1A – 3 exactor was worth $9.70 and adding Lucky In Lust to the mix boosted the triactor pay out to $23.40.
The Ontario-bred fillies will make their next start at Woodbine Racetrack on June 30 in Gold Series action or at Elmira Raceway on July 4 in a Grassroots contest. Their next Trillium event is Aug. 24 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Georgian Downs on Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1, with Grassroots action for the two-year-old pacing colts.
