The OSS Administration has received a total of 2,758 yearling nominations in 2004.

Although this is a drop of 6 per cent, from the previous year, 2003 was a record year for OSS yearlings with 2,942 yearlings nominated. The 2004 drop follows tremendous growth in yearlings nominated to the OSS over the past 5 years when the annual average increase was 10 per cent over the period.

“The number of mares bred in 2002, the breeding season for 2004 yearlings, declined 5 per cent over the previous year,” said Karen Hauver of OSS Administration. “Therefore, we were expecting the number of yearlings to decline. The good news is that 95 per cent of eligible foals were nominated to the OSS this year, as opposed to only 92 per cent last year. This is the highest percentage of eligible foals nominated since 2000.”
