CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — After a six week absence from Ontario Sires Stakes competition, the talented two-year-old pacing fillies return to provincial action at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday evening.

While many of the fillies have been battling North America’s best in Grand Circuit action at the Campbellville oval, trainer Joe Stutzman took advantage of the gap in Stunning Beauty’s Gold Series schedule to give the filly a well deserved rest.

“We turned her right out for a week or so and then started her back jogging and training,” says Stutzman. She wasn’t eligible (to Grand Circuit) and I didn’t want to race her in overnights being a two-year-old.”

The Campbellville resident and owners Terry Barnett of Guelph, Michael Williscraft of Grimsby, Paul Henderson of Ancaster and Gaetan Bono of Laval, QC acquired the Camluck daughter from breeder James Avritt of Lebanon, KY in mid-July and have been delighted with her progress.

“We bought her after she had a couple of starts, and we’re quite pleased with how she’s turning out,” says Stutzman. “She’s certainly in the Top 10 right now and I am assuming she’ll be in the Super Final. We just have to manage her properly to have her on her toes for then.

“I don’t want to race her more than I have to as a two-year-old,” he adds. “Hopefully we’ll have a real good filly for next year.”

With a record of three seconds, one third and one fifth in five Gold Series starts, Stunning Beauty currently sits fifth in the Super Final race with a total of 92 points. With regular reinsman Chris Christoforou in the race bike, the talented young pacer will be looking to pad her point tally from Post 6 in the second race at Mohawk on Thursday.

Also hoping his charges secure some valuable points toward a post season berth is trainer Carl Jamieson, who will harness two fillies on Thursday.

Ja El Astrelegant makes her Gold Series debut from Post 4 in the fourth race and Jamieson is expecting a strong effort from the daughter of his former protege, and $780,154 winner, Elegant Killean.

“She’ll be a little better this week,” says the Princeton resident in reference to the filly’s tenth place finish from Post 9 in the Sept. 17 She’s A Great Lady Final at Mohawk. “I don’t think there’s anything in there that’s better than her. She’s in a pretty good class.”

After starting her season at the Grassroots level, Ja El Astrelegant has elevated the level of her game in the last six weeks, scoring runner-up finishes in the Eternal Camnation Stake, a division of the Champlain Stakes and her She’s a Great Lady elimination. Donald Varcoe of Stayner and Thomas Kyron of Etobicoke own the Astreos daughter, who has banked a total of $89,183 through her first 10 starts.

Jamieson will also send out Don’t You Smile, who heads in to her $38,186 elimination off a third-place finish in the She’s A Great Lady Final.

“She raced really well the other night,” says her trainer, who shares ownership on the daughter of Grinfromeartoear with Kyron, Fred Brayford of Alliston and George Arthur Stable of Milton. “She’s a real nice filly, a kind of handy filly too.”

After missing four weeks of action due to sickness, Don’t You Smile has been impressive through the month of September, posting a third-place finish in a division of the Champlain Stakes and a 1:53.2 win in her She’s A Great Lady elimination.

“She didn’t race for almost 45 days, but she’s been good since,” says Jamieson. “She just had to get over her sickness.

“She’s come along really well. She was a $70,000 yearling and we are really pleased with her.”

Jody Jamieson will pilot Don’t You Smile from Post 3 in the sixth race Thursday.

Post time at Mohawk Racetrack on Thursday is 7:20 pm and the fillies will battle in Races 2, 4 and 6. The top three finishers from each elimination, plus one fourth-place finisher drawn by lot, will return to the Campbellville oval on Friday, Sept. 30 for their second last $130,000 Gold Final.
