INNISFIL, ON — Two-year-old trotting colt Potential Renegade wrapped up his Grassroots regular season with a flawless record of six wins in six starts when he captured the last of five divisions at Georgian Downs on Saturday evening.

With regular reinsman Ross Battin in the race bike, Potential Renegade floated down from Post 8 to land behind pacesetter Gripit N Ripit as that colt led the field of nine through fractions of :29.2, 1:00.4 and 1:31.1. Heading around the last turn Battin sent Potential Renegade after the leader and the gelding trotted off to a two and three quarter length score in 2:02.4. King Covenant trailed along behind Potential Renegade to earn the runner-up share of the $19,962 purse, while fan favourite Gripit N Ripit settled for third.

The win was the seventh in an outstanding season that has seen Potential Renegade bested just once; in his Sept. 17 Balanced Image elimination at Hanover Raceway, where he made a pair of uncharacteristic breaks. Peter Clements of Dobbinton bred and trains the CR Renegade son, sharing ownership on the winner of $53,746 with his daughter Amy Clements of Dobbinton.

Battin, who leads all drivers in the Ontario Sires Stakes’s Lampman Cup race, also posted a victory in the fourth division with Jimmy Hill. Taking command right off the gate from Post 1, the pair toured the Georgian Downs oval in a smart 2:01, the fastest mile of the five Grassroots battles. The Royal Ballad son finished three and a half lengths ahead of Extreme Games and fan favourite I’m Classy.

Through seven starts Jimmy Hill boasts a record of two wins, one second and two thirds. The James McEachern trainee wrapped up the Grassroots season in a two-way tie for seventh with 142 points and will make his next start in the Oct. 8 Grassroots Semifinal at Georgian Downs. Bill Van Katwyk of Peterborough bred and owns the winner of $30,370.

Jazz Valley leapt into the post season with a 2:02 win in the first division for trainer-driver Art Craig and owners Can Am Gold Standardbred of Freelton. It was the Berndt Hanover son’s first appearance in the winner’s circle through seven starts and boosted his Grassroots record to one win, one second, one third and two fourths in five outings for a total of 103 points.

Earl Of Pembroke and Mozart rounded out the top three in the first Grassroots division.

Su Lavec picked up his second straight Grassroots victory Saturday evening and bumped his point total to 174, good enough for a share of third in the division standings. With owner and trainer Normand Dessureault in the race bike the Mr Lavec colt shadowed pacesetter and fan favourite Heaven And Hall through fractions of :29.4, 1:02.2 and 1:32.3 before sprinting down the stretch to claim the 2:02.2 victory. Heaven And Hall finished three and one-quarter lengths back in second, while Sharpshootennorris landed in third.

McGregor resident Dessureault shares ownership on Su Lavec with breeder Daniel Durfy of Ypsilanti, MI. The consistent gelding boasts a record of two wins, two seconds and three thirds in eight starts this season.

The other division went to first time Grassroots starter Incredible Anthony, who scored his second straight victory with a 2:01.1 effort. The Incredible Abe son and driver John Kovacs bested Deputy Dylan and Lets Get Er Done. Per Henriksen trains Incredible Anthony for Ralph Del Priore, Jr. of Syracuse, NY and Michael Kendrick of Fayetteville, NY.

Georgian Downs fans will get a closer look at the top two-year-old trotting colts next Saturday, Oct. 8 when they square off in two Grassroots Semifinals, and again on Saturday, Oct. 15 when the top four finishers from each Semifinal battle for the Grassroots Championship title.
