GLOUCESTER, ON — Wayne and Trevor Henry gave Rideau Carleton Raceway fans a stirring finish to the first of two $47,785 Gold Eliminations on Sunday evening.
Driving two-year-old trotting fillies Tymal Timeout and Windsong Darling, the Henry brothers battled in the early going for the lead and then again in the stretch as elder brother Wayne and Tymal Timeout held off a challenge from younger brother Trevor and Windsor Darling. The reigning Gold Final champion and division leader, Tymal Timeout hit the wire three-quarters of a length in front of her stablemate in 2:00.3.
Maple Sugar and driver Trevor Ritchie were four and three-quarter lengths behind the Henry brothers in third.
Wayne Henry trains Tymal Timeout for his partners in the Arthur-based Henry Stable, father Ross and brother Trevor, and Daniel McCann of Parkhill. Through six starts the talented daughter of Royal Strength and Lukes Elvira has posted a record of five wins and one second and boasts earnings of $167,604.
A full sister to former Henry trainee Lookit ($172,707), Tymal Timeout was a $21,000 bargain at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale.
In addition to Tymal Timeout and Windsong Darling, Wayne Henry qualified a third filly for next Sunday’s Gold Final when Malahide finished third in the second Gold Elimination, hitting the wire two and three-quarter lengths behind winner Corporate Girl.
Corporate Girl and driver Trevor Ritchie started from the advantageous Post 1, but were well back of pacesetter Oaklea Polly at the :30.1 opening quarter. Heading for the 1:00.4 half, there was a still a sizeable gap between Corporate Girl and the leaders, but as the fillies passed the three-quarter marker in 1:31.2 Ritchie had the filly in position on the outside behind Wayne Henry and Malahide and was just two and a half lengths off the pace.
Turning for home Corporate Girl had disposed of Malahide and was closing in on the remaining three fillies. A strong finishing kick propelled the Striking Sahbra daughter down the stretch to a neck victory in 2:01.4. Lakeside Bride was nudged into second and Malahide finished third.
Dan Creighton trains Corporate Girl for his partners in the Danterra Racing Stable of Strathroy. The daughter of former Ontario Sires Stakes competitor Deanna Troy was a $28,000 acquisition from last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale and now boasts a record of one win and one second in three starts for earnings of $32,356. Her only off the board finish came in the July 23 Gold Final at Windsor Raceway where she made a costly break in the early going that left her out of contention.
The top four fillies from each elimination, plus one fifth-place finisher drawn by lot, will return to Rideau Carleton Raceway next Sunday, Aug. 6 for the third $130,000 Gold Final on their freshman calendar.
