CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Steve Condren and Brad Maxwell teamed up at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening to capture both Gold Eliminations for the three-year-old trotting fillies.
The pair made their first appearance in the winner’s circle with reigning Gold Final champion and heavy favourite Pure Ivory, who coasted around the seven-eighths mile oval to a 1:56.2 victory.
Oaklea Odessa finished one and one-quarter lengths behind Pure Ivory, with Birminghim hot on her heels in third. Fourth and fifth-place finishers Porsche Hall and Corries Glory also advanced to next Monday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Milton resident Condren shares ownership on Pure Ivory with breeder Harry Rutherford of Mount Pleasant, Jerry Vanboekel of Bright and Christina Maxwell of Cambridge. The partners have watched the talented daughter of Striking Sahbra and former Ontario Sires Stakes star Image Control capture six of nine starts this season and bank $247,079.
Pure Ivory and Condren will defend their Gold Final title, and try to extend their current win streak to three races, from Post 4 at Mohawk next Monday.
In the second elimination Condren and Meadowview Tiffy left from Post 2 and settled into third on the rail as Spirit Of The Law and Lisas Mission battled to a :28.4 opening quarter and a :58 half. On their way to the 1:27 three-quarters, Condren sent Meadowview Tiffy after the lead and the filly responded with a game effort that propelled her down the stretch to a three-quarter length victory in 1:56.1.
Spirit Of The Law stayed game for second, while Spare Time Rozie out trotted fan favourite Oaklea Omega to claim the third-place finisher’s share of the $49,008 Gold Elimination purse. Oaklea Omega settled for fourth and Lisas Mission picked up the last spot in the Gold Final with her fifth-place effort.
Maxwell trains Meadowview Tiffy for breeder Charles Reid’s Meadowview Farms Inc. of Orono. The Angus Hall miss is a half-sister to former Ontario Sires Stakes champion Meadowview Sunny ($671,336) and $361,197 winner Meadowview Paul.
The win was the filly’s first through nine starts this season and the 1:56.1 clocking lowered her personal best by two full seconds. Poor luck in the post position draw has hampered Meadowview Tiffy all season and in next Monday’s Gold Final she will start from the outside Post 10 for the second time in just over two weeks.
