WINDSOR, ON — Mr Feelgood picked up his first Gold Final trophy with an effortless 1:51.3 score at Windsor Raceway on Sunday evening.
Starting from Post 1, Mark MacDonald settled the three-year-old pacing colt on the rail behind early leader Impeccable as that colt sped by the quarter pole in :26.4. Heading for the :55.2 half, MacDonald sent Mr Feelgood after the lead and the pair were one and three-quarter lengths on top by the 1:23.3 three-quarters.
Although Windsong Cruiser tried hard to close the gap in the stretch, Mr Feelgood sailed under the wire one and a half lengths in front. Windsong Cruiser claimed the runner-up share of the $130,000 Gold Final purse and early leader Impeccable finished third.
Mr Feelgood debuted in the Ontario Sires Stakes program in last weekend’s Gold Elimination, cruising to a 1:51.4 victory. The son of Grinfromeartoear and Best Of Memories started his season off competing against the best three-year-old pacing colts North America has to offer, winning a division of the Burlington Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack on June 3 and finishing fourth in his elimination and the consolation of the Pepsi North America Cup.
Following the colt’s gruelling early season, trainer Jimmy Takter gave Mr Feelgood three weeks off before starting him in a leg of the Summertime Series at Mohawk Racetrack on July 8. The half-brother to $1.2 million winner Remember When recorded a 1:51.4 win and was back at the Campbellville oval one week later with a 1:51.2 personal best effort to claim the Summertime Series Final.
A runner-up finish to Doonbeg in the Canadian Breeders Championship eliminations followed, and Mr Feelgood came into last week’s elimination round off a fifth-place finish in the July 29 Canadian Breeders Final.
Canamerica Capital Corp. of Milton, Diversity Stable of North Bergen, NJ and Lindy Farms of Conn of Enfield, CT share ownership on Mr Feelgood, who was a $130,000 US purchase out of the 2004 Tattersalls Yearling Sale. Sunday’s Gold Final victory boosted the well-bred youngster’s record to six wins and one second in 11 starts for earnings of $220,627.
Mr Feelgood will have an opportunity to defend his Gold Final title when the three-year-old pacing colts take their high speed show to Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 27.
Sunday’s Gold Final wrapped up Windsor Raceway’s 2006 Ontario Sires Stakes season, which saw three-year-old pacing filly Red Star Biggirl set a track and Ontario Sires Stakes record and Canadette lower the two-year-old pacing filly track record. A fresh crop of talented trotters and pacers will arrive in Windsor next spring to take their own run at the track’s history books.
