INNISFIL, ON — Neither wind, nor rain, nor gloom of night could stay three-year-old trotting colt Majestic Son from the swift completion of his sixth straight victory at Georgian Downs on Saturday evening.
In spite of a rain soaked track rated two seconds slower than normal and the chill of a 14 degree Celsius evening, the indomitable Majestic Son and driver Trevor Ritchie rolled to a nine and one-quarter length victory in 1:55.1 to claim their second consecutive Gold Final title.
Leaving from Post 4 the heavy favourites allowed fleet footed Indiana Hall to claim the early lead and take the field to a sharp :27.1 quarter and :56.4 half. Heading for the 1:26.1 three-quarters Ritchie sent Majestic Son up the outside and the Angus Hall son was five lengths in front by the time he turned for home. Down the stretch Majestic Son put another four lengths between himself and runner-up Was It A Dream, while third-place finisher Dr Robert Johns was 12 and one-quarter lengths behind the winner.
Colonel Talbot and Investor rounded out the money earners in the $130,000 Gold Final, while early pacesetter Indiana Hall faded to eighth.
Owned by the Majestic Son Stable of Lansdowne and trained by Lansdowne resident Mark Steacy, Majestic Son has now captured nine of 12 starts, finished third once, fourth once and out of the money in one start. Through two seasons of racing the talented trotter has banked $988,385 without leaving the province.
Majestic Son is eligible to the Simcoe Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack on Sept. 9, but his main target this month is the Sept. 16 elimination round of the $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic.
Ontario’s exciting three-year-old trotting colts do not return to Gold Series action until Sept. 29 at Mohawk Racetrack, with the Final following on Oct. 6 and the top 10 point earners making their way to Woodbine Racetrack for the $300,000 Super Final on Oct. 14.
At present, Majestic Son dominates the point standings with 258 points, 121 ahead of second-place Was It A Dream. The current cut off for a berth in the lucrative Super Final is 66 points.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement makes one final stop at Georgian Downs this season, bringing the two-year-old trotting fillies to town for their last Trillium Series event on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
