ELORA, ON — Albert In The City extended his remarkable win streak to 14 with an effortless 1:54.3 victory in the sixth Grassroots divisions at Grand River Raceway on Monday evening.
With regular reinsman Trevor Henry in the race bike, Albert In The City floated away from the starting gate and was sitting fourth as Youretheluckyone led the field of three-year-old pacing colts to a :27.3 opening quarter. Heading for the :56.1 half, Henry sent Albert In The City to the outside and the gelding sprinted by the 1:25.2 three quarters with a two length advantage.
At the wire Albert In The City and Henry were three and three-quarter lengths ahead of runner-up Tipper Too and five lengths ahead of third-place finisher Justice Cam.
“He’s a really handy, really good gaited horse,” said trainer Paul Taylor about Albert In The City. “We just have to keep him happy. We jog him first thing and then turn him out in the back paddock.
“Albert looks after himself. He never gets excited, he’s a very laid back horse,” added the Clinton resident.
Taylor trains Albert In The City for Glenview Livestock Ltd. of Wallenstein, who acquired the son of Albert Albert and Big City Dreams for $17,000 at the 2004 Forest City Yearling Sale. Since then the gelding has accumulated 17 wins, one second and one third in 24 starts and earned $109,838 without ever setting foot on a Woodbine Entertainment Group track. In fact all but two of the gelding’s starts have been on the half-mile.
The win was Albert In The City’s fourth over the Grand River Raceway half-mile. The fleet footed pacer and Henry etched their names into the Elora oval’s history books on Aug. 1 when they tripped the teletimer in 1:53.4 to establish an all age track record.
With a flawless four wins in four Grassroots starts, Albert In The City has 200 points and is currently tied for top spot in the division standings with Bend It, who settled for a runner-up finish to Shadowwavekillean in the second division at Grand River on Monday.
Mike Sumner piloted Shadowwavekillean to the 1:57.3 victory for trainer Scott McNiven and owners the Someday Stable of Putnam and Douglas Dunbar of London. Through 16 starts this season the chestnut son of Run The Table and Swing Till Dawn has posted four wins, one second and two thirds for earnings of $37,095. Monday’s victory boosted the colt into sixteenth spot in the race for one of 16 berths in the Sept. 29 Grassroots Semifinal.
Dreamluck rounded out the top three in the second division.
Driver Allan Cullen made a successful sojourn to Grand River Raceway on Monday, capturing three of the seven Grassroots divisions. The Windsor resident made his first appearance in the winner’s circle following the first division, which saw him guide Noble Seelster to a 1:56.4 triumph over Daylon Classic and Hidden Astreos.
John Pentland trains Noble Seelster, who had to overcome the outside Post 8 to score his first Grassroots victory and his fifth win of the season. The Dorchester resident and William Besterd of London share ownership on the Camluck colt.
Cullen was back in front of the grandstand two races later with Anthony Montini trainee Areyouinorout. The veteran reinsman opted for front end tactics with the Camluck gelding and the pair hit the wire five lengths up on Object Of Art and Chevron Hanover in 1:54.4.
J J J Stables of Aldergrove, BC and Alan Anderson of Willows, CA own Areyouinorout, who came into the race off a fourth-place finish in the $508,000 Confederation Cup Final on Aug. 20 at Flamboro Downs.
Cullen completed his driving hat trick in the last division aboard Wingandaprayer. The Grinfromeartoear son led the field through fractions of :28.2, :58.1 and 1:26.2 and then fought off Hyperion Hanover and Sudburysatrdaynite to claim the 1:55 victory.
Robert Atkin trains Wingandaprayer for Millar Farms of Newmarket. Monday’s win elevated the colt into sixth place in the Grassroots standings and virtually assures him a berth in the lucrative post season.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Golden Standard in 1:56.3 and Stonebridge Ideal in 1:55.2.
The three-year-old pacing colts complete their regular season on Sept. 16 at Flamboro Downs and Grand River Raceway wraps up its 2006 Ontario Sires Stakes season on Tuesday, Sept. 19 with Grassroots action for the two-year-old pacing fillies.
