GLOUCESTER, ON — Rideau Carleton Raceway fans are in for a treat this Thursday as a pair of the continent’s top two-year-old pacing fillies head to Ottawa to compete in Trillium Series action.
She’s A Great Lady winner Appleoosa Hanover and Bluegrass winner Yankee Augusta will both be looking for their fifth victory of the season when they step in behind the starting gate on Thursday. While Yankee Augusta heads into her second Trillium appearance from a two race hot streak at Kentucky’s historic Red Mile, trainer Carl Jamieson is hoping Appleoosa Hanover’s Trillium debut will see her bounce back to form after a disappointing seventh-place finish in the Breeders Crown Eliminations at Woodbine Racetrack last Friday.
“I didn’t think she raced good. She didn’t seem to race to her potential,” says the Princeton resident, who shares ownership on Appleoosa Hanover with Joanne Morrison of Beeton and Thomas Kyron of Etobicoke. “She was maybe not tight enough. She maybe needed another start or two under her belt.”
The Oct. 20 elimination was just Appleoosa Hanover’s second start since capturing the $754,500 She’s A Great Lady Final on Sept. 2. Scratched out of the Sept. 8 Champlain Stake due to sickness, the daughter of Western Hanover and Appleonia Art warmed up for the Breeders Crown Eliminations with a third-place finish in an Oct. 12 overnight at Woodbine, but in hindsight Jamieson wishes he could have squeezed two prep races in before the season championship.
“She maybe should have had another tightener before the Breeders Crown Eliminations,” reiterates the trainer. “But we’ll give her a whirl up there (Rideau Carleton). Maybe it will brave her back up again.”
In spite of the bout with sickness, the $32,000 US yearling acquisition has finished out of the top three just twice in 10 starts for a record of four wins, two seconds, two thirds and earnings of $442,294. She and regular reinsman Jody Jamieson will start from Post 5 in the first $39,617 Trillium division. Among the fillies the pair will face are four Grassroots regulars and one other American-bred.
Two races after Appleoosa Hanover attempts to score her fifth victory, Yankee Augusta will do the same from Post 4 in the second Trillium division.
The daughter of Western Hanover and Arts Masterpiece rides into Ottawa on a three race win streak including a pair of impressive victories during Grand Circuit action at The Red Mile in Lexington, KY where she won a division of the Bluegrass in a personal best 1:52.3 and then followed it up with an International Stallion Stake triumph in 1:52.4.
Dan Creighton trains the talented youngster for The Masters Stable of Ilderton, who purchased the filly for $50,000 US from last fall’s Lexington Select Sale. Through seven starts Yankee Augusta boasts a record of four wins and one third for earnings of $114,531.
Sylvain Filion will steer Yankee Augusta on Thursday, squaring off against three fillies that battled in the Grassroots Championship on Oct. 7, one Gold Series competitor and one other American-bred filly.
Rideau Carleton Raceway’s Thursday evening program gets under way at 6:30 pm, with the two-year-old pacing filly Trillium Series events, open to Canadian and American-breds owned by Ontario residents, slated as Races 2 and 4.
