DUNDAS, ON — Flamboro Downs fans will barely have time to catch their breath after this weekend’s exceptional Confederation Cup card before the Ontario Sires Stakes program arrives back at the Dundas oval on Wednesday with Grassroots action for the two-year-old pacing fillies.
Six divisions of fillies will go postward on Wednesday, competing for a total of $108,932, and points leader Onyx Killean will be looking for her third straight Grassroots victory at her hometown oval.
“We can fall out of bed into Flamboro. We only live up the road,” quips owner Liam Wallace.
In the first two Grassroots events, at Hanover Raceway on July 21 and Clinton Raceway on Aug. 5, Onyx Killean dominated her competition. The daughter of Astreos and Odessa Blue Chip hit the wire eight lengths on top at Hanover in 1:58.3 and two lengths ahead at Clinton in 1:59.2.
Wallace says the filly, who counts $111,397 winner Odyssey Killean and $142,955 winner Venus Killean among her siblings, has shown potential from her earliest lessons and has effortlessly adapted to the rigours of racing.
“She looked good all the time. She’s done it easy; she still does it easy,” says the Troy resident. “She’s a big filly so we’re taking it easy early on with her.”
Rather than train Onyx Killean fast miles, trainer-driver Gary Wallace has maintained a slow and steady pace with the filly, employing the same methods his family has used for years on their farm in the heart of Dublin, Ireland.
“She has plenty of speed, but we’ve never really knocked her about,” says owner Wallace. “We don’t do the fast mile business training. We don’t do it at home, so we don’t do it here, and it seems to be working okay. Touch wood, as the man says.”
Gary Wallace and Onyx Killean will start from Post 3 in the seventh race on Wednesday, facing a field of seven that includes Aug. 5 Grassroots winner Its About Motion from Post 1.
“There will be some decent ones in with her this week,” acknowledges Wallace. “But we’ll have a good time there Wednesday.”
The two-year-old pacing fillies will get the good times started at 6 pm on Wednesday, Aug. 22, and continue to entertain Flamboro Downs fans in Races 2, 6, 7, 10 and 11.
