DUNDAS, ON — Three-year-old trotting filly Movin Over finally delivered the kind of luck trainer Stacy Ann Beckley has been waiting for all season to capture Sunday afternoon’s Gold Final at Flamboro Downs.
Kicking off the stakes action on the exceptional Confederation Cup program, Movin Over delivered an impressive come from behind effort in Race 2 to steal the win away from pacesetter J M Aggie and reigning Gold Final queen Carolyn AS.
Jason Brewer picked up the mount on Movin Over for the final and eased the Royal Ballad daughter off the starting gate from Post 6 as J M Aggie hit the opening quarter in :28.1. Holding steady on the rail in the middle of the eight filly field, Brewer and Movin Over watched as J M Aggie and Carolyn AS battled to a :57.4 half and a 1:26.4 three-quarters, and were still three and three-quarter lengths behind the leaders when they made the turn for home.
As the battle took its toll on the front runners, Brewer sent Movin Over after the Gold Final crown and the filly delivered an impressive finishing kick, trotting under the wire two lengths ahead of J M Aggie and Carolyn AS in 1:57.2. The mile matched the Ontario Sires Stakes mark set by Pure Ivory in 2006 and equalled by Carolyn AS in last week’s Gold Elimination.
Stacy Ann Beckley and William Beckley of Cambridge share ownership on Movin Over, who now boasts a record of three wins, three seconds and one third in 12 starts and earnings of $111,756.
Two races later three-year-old trotting colt Beer Budget bettered Movin Over’s clocking by one-fifth of a second to claim his first Gold Final title. Driver Luc Ouellette sent the ultra-consistent colt straight to the front from Post 1 and Beer Budget controlled the pace through fractions of :28.2, :58.3 and 1:28 before coasting home to a three and three-quarter length victory in a personal best 1:57.1. Hoopie and Super Chuck rounded out the top three.
The win improved Beer Budget’s sophomore campaign statistics to two wins, three seconds and one third in 11 starts for earnings of $170,452. Trainer Chris Beaver of Rockwood and Johanna Beaver of Delaware, OH share ownership on the Yankee Paco son, who captured the freshman trotting colt division championship last season without ever winning a Gold Final title.
After three exciting Confederation Cup Eliminations, the two-year-old pacing colts rolled onto the Dundas oval for their second $130,000 Gold Final and less than two minutes later Deuce Seelster rolled away with his second straight trophy.
Starting from the trailing Post 9, driver Paul MacDonell positioned the Western Maverick son in fourth through the early going and then sent him up the outside heading for the :57.3 half. Deuce Seelster took control before the colts reached the 1:25.3 three-quarters and simply sprinted away from the competition to a two and one-half length triumph in 1:54.1. Keystone Horatio and Go West Young Cam came up the outside to claim the second and third-place spots.
Deuce Seelster is now undefeated through five starts — one overnight at The Meadowlands on July 5 and the elimination and final of the first two Gold Series events. Trained by Darren McCall for Katherine Bardis of Sacramento, CA, the colt has already earned $173,020 and has hit the wire an average of two and a half lengths in front of the competition in each start.
One race after Deuce Seelster scored his latest triumph, Laughing Art ran down Ontario Sires Stakes star Domitian Hanover at the wire to capture the $548,500 Confederation Cup Final in 1:53.3. The Artsplace son, owned by Antonio Chiaravalle of Hamilton, also captured his elimination with a 1:53.1 effort. Jody Jamieson of Cambridge piloted Laughing Art to both the elimination and final victories for Chiaravalle and trainer Bill Elliott.
Stakes action continues at Flamboro Downs this Wednesday, Aug. 22 with six Grassroots divisions for the talented two-year-old pacing fillies.
