ELORA, ON — Ontario’s three-year-old trotting colts begin the second half of their Grassroots season at Grand River Raceway on Friday, and trainer Wayne Henry is hoping all three of his entrants are on top of their game as the race for a post season berth heats up.
The Arthur resident will harness Odee Amigo from Post 8 in Race 8, Archies Dream from Post 2 in Race 9 and T Js Mr Lavec from Post 3 in the tenth race. With one win and two second-place finishes in Grassroots competition, Odee Amigo currently sits tied for fifth in the division standings, and Henry is hoping the colt can overcome the outside post at Grand River to add a few more points to his tally.
“He’s been getting a lot better lately,” notes Henry. “He had a little trouble getting going, but now he’s trotting pretty good.”
Trevor Henry will pilot Odee Amigo on Friday, facing off against a field of seven that includes twelfth ranked Super Star K from Post 7. Ray Odorico of Limehouse bred and owns the son of Royal Strength and Wheely Dal, who boasts a record of one win, three seconds and two thirds in 11 starts this season.
With one second and two thirds in the first half of the Grassroots season, Archies Dream is just shy of a spot in the top 16. Henry says the Angus Hall son battled sickness through the early part of the campaign, and seems to be rounding back into the form that saw him win four of seven Grassroots starts as a two-year-old.
“We had a lot of sickness early, but I think I’ve got it all cleaned up now,” explains Henry, who will also steer the colt on Friday. “I thought he’d be a little better horse this year, but it looks like he’s coming around now.”
The Henry Stable and Sopman Holdings Limited of Thornhill bred and own Archies Dream, who heads into Friday’s contest off a third-place finish in a 1:58.4 mile in the Aug. 11 Grassroots event at Hiawatha Horse Park.
Henry’s final entry on the $120,000 Grassroots program is T Js Mr Lavec, who opened his sophomore campaign in the Gold Series where he scored a fifth-place finish in Gold Final action and one third and one fourth-place finish in his Gold Elimination starts.
“It’s just a little easier down below,” says Henry of the decision to move the gelding into the Grassroots. “But I dropped him down and he got interfered with in Sarnia (Aug. 11), so that didn’t work out too good.”
Another homebred, T Js Mr Lavec is owned by James Laverty of Sauble Beach and driver Trevor Henry of Arthur. The Mr Lavec son has two wins, two seconds and one third to his credit through 11 starts this season.
The three-year-old trotting colts open Grand River Raceway’s Friday evening program at 7:15 pm, and are also featured in Races 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.
