INNISFIL, ON — Onyx Killean extended her perfect record to four in Grassroots competition at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening.
The two-year-old pacing filly and driver Alan Wallace started from Post 7 in the third $18,052 division and eased down on to the rail in fourth as Josie Wales led the field to a :27.2 opening quarter. The pair continued to sit on the rail in mid-pack as Josie Wales hit the half in :58.4, then Wallace popped Onyx Killean to the outside, and by the 1:27.2 three-quarters she was circling three-wide around McKenna Sister.
A head behind as the fillies turned for home, Onyx Killean pulled away in the stretch to a one and one-quarter length victory in 1:57.1. McKenna Sister settled for second and Shipps Bikini rounded out the top three.
Owned by Liam Wallace and trained by Gary Wallace of Troy, ON, Onyx Killean has only raced in the Grassroots program this summer and has emerged victorious from outings at Hanover Raceway, Clinton Raceway, Flamboro Downs and now Georgian Downs. With her perfect record, the Astreos miss sits atop the two-year-old pacing filly division standings with a total of 200 points.
A Fiesty Affair rang up the fastest mile of the six Grassroots divisions, stopping the clock at 1:54.1 with a gate to wire performance in Race 10. The daughter of Camluck and So Fiesty hit the wire four lengths in front of Got The Munchies and Its About Motion was 10 and three-quarter lengths back in third.
The Bill Elliott trainee started her provincial campaign with a nine length win in the Grassroots season opener at Hanover Raceway on July 21, and then bounced up to the Gold Series for two starts, finishing fifth in her elimination and third in the final over Grand River Raceway’s half-mile oval. Bred and owned by Robert Hamather of Exeter, A Fiesty Affair moved into the top 16 with her second Grassroots victory and currently sits in a two-way tie for eighth.
A Fiesty Affair shares eighth spot in the standings with Twin B Shasta, who was also a winner at Georgian Downs on Tuesday. In rein to Jason Brewer, Twin B Shasta eased off the starting gate from Post 2 and was sitting seventh as Bah Nessa rocked to a :27.4 opening quarter. As Bah Nessa put the brakes on and Stylish Fit moved into the lead, Brewer sent Twin B Shasta to the outside, where she sat through the :58.2 half and 1:26.3 three-quarters.
Around the final turn Twin B Shasta wrestled control away from Stylish Fit and powered away to a four length victory in 1:56.3. Fan favourite Stylish Fit settled for second and Bunny Mach got up for third.
Twin B Shasta, a daughter of Million Dollar Cam and Stryper, was also a Grassroots winner at Flamboro Downs on Aug. 22. Scott McEneny trains the filly for Plam Stables and Shasta Stable of Toronto and Stephen Moza of Kelowna, BC.
Twin B Shasta was one of two fillies driver Jason Brewer guided to Grassroots glory on Tuesday. The reinsman also engineered a 1:55 front end score with St Lads Seraph in the first division.
Firing out of Post 7, St Lads Seraph grabbed the early lead and never let go, digging in down the stretch to claim the quarter length victory over Scary Stars and Elm Grove Camlady.
Trainer Sandra Spencer and Kathleen Brogan of Windsor share ownership on St Lads Seraph, who now has two wins, one second and one third in Grassroots action for a total of 137 points and a share of second in the division standings.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Kingfishers Gypsy in 1:56 and Intended To Fly in 1:55.1.
The freshman pacing fillies will gather for their last regular season Grassroots event on Oct. 10 at Windsor Raceway while Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Georgian Downs on Tuesday, Oct. 23 with Gold Elimination action for the exciting three-year-old pacing fillies.
