WINDSOR, ON — Two weeks of preparation paid off for local horsemen Philip and David Edwards as three-year-old pacing colt Twin B Impact scored an upset victory in his Grassroots division at Windsor Raceway on Wednesday evening and earned a berth in the lucrative post season.

Starting from Post 6 David Edwards floated Twin B Impact off the gate and settled the Camotion son on the rail in fifth, while fan favourite Mach Hula took full advantage of Post 1, firing off the wings to a :27 opening quarter. Heading toward the :57.1 half, Edwards sent Twin B Impact up the outside behind Machs Power Play, while Mach Hula continued to set the pace.

After the second quarter breather, Mach Hula laid down a 1:25.3 fraction at the three-quarter marker and hit the top of the stretch one and one-quarter lengths ahead of the field. Turning for home Twin B Impact was still three lengths back in fifth, but when Edwards hit the accelerator the lightly rated colt fought his way down the stretch to a neck victory over Mach Hula in a personal best 1:54.3. Three Cents rounded out the top three, half a length behind the battling leaders.

David Edwards drives Twin B Impact for his father, trainer Philip Edwards, and owners Arthur Slack of Rockwood, Kenneth Slack of Cumbria, ENG, and George Harrison and Robert Harrison of Lancashire, ENG.

The time and energy the Windsor-based horsemen invested in Twin B Impact heading into Wednesday’s contest paid off in spades as the colt leapt from twenty-ninth into a two-way tie for twelfth spot in the three-year-old pacing colt division standings. The top 16 point earners will now square off at Kawartha Downs on Oct. 18 in a pair of $30,000 Semifinals, with the top four finishers from each Semifinal advancing to the $100,000 Grassroots Championship.

Among the colts Twin B Impact will face in the post season is Wholly Louy, who clocked the fastest mile of the five divisions on Wednesday to wrap up his regular season with a perfect record of three wins in three Grassroots starts.

With Brad Forward in the race bike for trainer Bill Elliott and owner-breeder Robert Hamather of Exeter, Camluck son Wholly Louy rocked around the Windsor oval to an eight length win in 1:52.4. Lucky Secret and Live For Today crossed the wire two seconds later in the runner-up spots.

Junior K also wrapped up the regular season with a perfect three-for-three record, coasting along on the front end to a 1:55.1 victory over Hes A Lion and Gunsmoke VMW.

Trainer Keith Waples of Guelph owns the Astreos son, who missed most of the summer after being scratched sick out of the July 15 Grassroots event at Clinton Raceway. Randy Waples drove Junior K to the one and one-quarter length victory, the first of two wins he would score in Grassroots action.

Waples made his second trip to the Windsor winner’s circle after guiding Camifications to a come-from-behind victory for trainer Robert Fellows in the last Grassroots division. The Camluck son hit the wire four lengths ahead of Whitesand Raider and PJ Count On Luck, stopping the clock at 1:53.2.

Unfortunately, the win was not enough to propel Camifications into the post season. In his only other Grassroots start the gelding finished fifth, giving him a total of 55 points, 45 short of the cut off for the top 16. John Denison of Ft. Washington, MD, Frank Denison of Waldorf, MD, Richard De Joy of Falconer, NY and John Wagner of Fairfax, VA own the winner of $75,062.

The other Grassroots division went to Cuban Seelster and driver Jason Brewer, who led the second race field to a 1:54 victory. Denfield resident Ray Bunn trains the Intrepid Seelster son for his partners McCarthy Family Farms Ltd. of Granton, Tara Foy of Ilderton and Don Thomson of St. Marys.

Cuban Seelster wrapped up his regular season with a total of 180 points earned through three wins, one second and one fifth in five Grassroots starts, good enough for second spot in the division standings.

Point leader Mighty And Strong and Tymal Cameron rounded out the top three in the second $21,911 Grassroots division.

Ontario Sires Stakes excitement continues at Windsor Raceway this weekend, as the two-year-old trotting colts prepare for battle in their last Gold Series event this Sunday, Oct. 7 at 7 pm.
