GLOUCESTER, ON — Proving to be a golden acquisition for his new owners, two-year-old pacing colt Haul Away captured Sunday’s $130,000 Gold Final at Rideau Carleton Raceway in commanding fashion.

Canada’s leading reinsman, Jody Jamieson, made the trip to the nation’s capital to steer Haul Away in the Gold Final, and eased the colt off the starting gate from Post 3. Sitting fifth on the rail when early leader Toughest Of All reached the :27.4 opening quarter, Jamieson sent Haul Away up the outside behind Windsong Gorgeous and Stonebridge Tonic heading for the :57.3 half rung up by reigning Gold Final champion Wellthereyougo.

With a parade of horses marching forward on his flank, Wellthereyougo skipped offstride and handed the lead to Windsong Gorgeous. Jamieson and Haul Away returned to the rail briefly while Windsong Gorgeous led the field to the 1:26 three-quarters, but were soon headed for the lead. On top by one and a half lengths at the top of the stretch, the pair accelerated away from their peers to a four and three-quarter length win in 1:56.1.

Windsong Gorgeous made full use of the opportunity handed to him when elimination winner Future Million was scratched out of the final, drawing in off the also eligible list to earn the second-place share, and Code Word closed hard to finish third.

The victory was Haul Away’s second since Larry Menary of Cheltenham, Denis Breton of Welland, and Phil Silvestri and Joseph Settimi of Hamilton acquired the colt from breeder and trainer Joe Hudon. With three wins, including two Grassroots victories, in six starts under Hudon’s tutelage, the talented son of Modern Art and Armbro Reno has now added last week’s elimination trophy and Sunday’s Gold Final hardware to his collection.

Dave Menary trains Haul Away, and will be now be readying the colt for the fourth Gold Series event, Oct. 3 and 10 at Mohawk and Woodbine Racetracks.

Rideau Carleton Raceway fans were also treated to a trio of Gold Eliminations on Sunday night by the two-year-old trotting colts.

Zorgwijk Kingpin kicked off the festivities in the first $40,000 elimination with a front end score in a smart 1:58.2. Trevor Ritchie engineered the three and one-half length victory for trainer Ronnie MacLean of Ingersoll and his partners Murray Neilson, Scot Wood and Joseph Serratore of London. Tampico and reigning Gold Final champion Text Me rounded out the top three.

Through six starts, Zorgwijk Kingpin has now posted two Gold Elimination wins. The chestnut son of Southwind Lustre also has three second-place finishes to his credit for earnings of $108,116.

Steve Condren piloted Reach Higher to a gate to wire victory in the second elimination, halting the Rideau Carleton teletimer at 2:00.2. War King Ton was four and one-half lengths back in second and Pointe To Pointe was another length back in third.

John Kopas trains the Striking Sahbra son for KR Stable of Milton, Douglas Millard of Woodstock, LLK Stable of Mississauga and the Estate of George F. Hempt Trust of Camp Hill, PA. Through nine starts the colt boasts three wins and two seconds for earnings of $92,787.

The final elimination was captured by Magic Fruit, who snatched the nose victory away from pacesetter Grumpy Jake in the final strides. The leaders were clocked in 2:01, with Lucero two lengths back in third.

Per Henriksen trains and drives Magic Fruit for Ernst Gerbaulet of Recklinghausen, GER. Sunday’s victory was the Striking Sahbra son’s first in nine starts.
