LONDON, ON — Consistent two-year-old trotting filly Wilsonator found her way to the Gold Final winner’s circle at Western Fair Raceway on Saturday evening with a commanding front end effort.
Starting from Post 3 with Sylvain Filion in the race bike, Wilsonator leapt out to a two and one-half length lead before the :29.4 quarter and never looked back. The Kadabra daughter cruised through a 1:00.3 half and a 1:30.2 three-quarters before powering down the stretch to a one length victory in a track record equalling 2:00.
Emmylou Who, owned by Linda Wellwood of St. George Brant, Tammy Aspden of Caistor Centre, Anne Shunock of Dorchester and Diane Ingham of Mount Pleasant, finished second, and Daria Hall rounded out the top three in the $130,000 Gold Final. Fan favourite Random Destiny made a late break and finished fourth.
Wilsonator’s 2:00 triumph equalled Western Fair’s freshman trotting filly track record, set by Ontario Sires Stakes performer Bella Dolce in 2007.
Edward Wilson of Seagrave, ON and Michael Pozefsky of Gloversville, NY bred and own Wilsonator, who has posted two Gold Elimination wins and Saturday’s Gold Final victory in 11 starts, along with two seconds and one third-place finish for earnings of $174,800. Rob Fellows trains the talented youngster, who heads into the Nov. 14 Super Final at Woodbine Racetrack in second spot in the division standings with 230 points.
Seven races later, Keystone Raptor scored an upset over his stablemate, and fan favourite, Grin For Money to claim the two-year-old pacing colt Gold Final title.
Starting from the trailing Post 8, driver Jack Moiseyev sent Keystone Raptor after rail sitter Brusiers Brother when that colt led the field to a :28.2 opening quarter. Brusiers Brother continued to set the pace through the :57.3 half and the 1:26.1 three-quarters, while his stablemate from the Louis Eftimiadis stable, Adrenaline, applied pressure from the outside.
Heading down the backstretch for the second time the field, including favourite Grin For Money, was stacked up four-wide, but they were unable to gain any traction on Brusiers Brother, who turned for home one and a half lengths on top. Tipping out from the pocket with Keystone Raptor, Moiseyev hit the accelerator and the Astreos son sprinted home to a half length victory in 1:55.4.
Brusiers Brother picked up the runner-up cheque, with Windsong Gorgeous getting around Adrenaline for third.
The Gold Final triumph was only the second victory of the season for Keystone Raptor, who is trained by Milton resident John Kopas for his partners John Fielding of Toronto, Clay Horner of Toronto and High Stakes Inc. of Moffat. In 12 outings the colt has accumulated two wins, three seconds and three thirds for earnings of $154,555.
The win moved Keystone Raptor into fifth spot in the division standings with a total of 120 points, 60 behind his stablemate Grin For Money. Both colts will spend this week preparing for Saturday’s Super Final at Woodbine Racetrack, where the top 10 point earners will battle for $300,000.
Ontario Sires Stakes performers make one last stop at Western Fair Raceway, on Saturday, Nov. 28, when the three-year-old trotting fillies will meet in their final Trillium Series battle.
