CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Basking in the long awaited evening heat at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, Ontario Sires Stakes fans were treated to a sizzling performance by three-year-old trotting colt Daylon Magician in the first $130,000 Gold Final of his 2011 campaign.

With regular reinsman Jack Moiseyev of Moffat, ON in the race bike, Daylon Magician eased away from Post 6 and settled on the rail, reaching the opening eighth in sixth spot. Buckhams Bay rang up the opening fraction, reaching the eighth pole in :13.2, but last year’s top money earner soon handed things off to Mr Joe Sixpack, who was hustled away from Post 9 by Moffat resident Jody Jamieson.

As Mr Joe Sixpack reached the :28.2 quarter, Moiseyev and Daylon Magician had improved slightly to fifth spot on the rail, then as the leader passed by the halfway marker in :57.3, Moiseyev sent the heavy favourite up the outside. Acton, ON resident Trevor Ritchie opted for the same strategy with Lakefield and provided Daylon Magician with a windbreak through the 1:26.1 three-quarters and around the final turn, when Moiseyev squared up his colt and turned him loose.

With a clear view of the wire, Daylon Magician shifted into sprint mode and the Kadabra colt rocketed down the stretch to a one and three-quarter length victory, matching the 1:53.2 Ontario Sires Stakes record set by Arch Madness in 2007.

Sim Brown almost matched Daylon Magician’s :26.3 final quarter, trotting into second place, while pacesetter Mr Joe Sixpack hung on for a game third. Lakefield and Buckhams Bay rounded out the cheque earners.

Moiseyev engineered Daylon Magician’s first Gold Final victory for Dave Lemon of Komoka, ON, who bred, owns and trains the gifted young trotter. The win marked the second time the colt’s name has been entered in the Ontario Sires Stakes history books. In last season’s Super Final he roared around the Woodbine Racetrack oval in an OSS record 1:55.3.

A winner in last week’s Gold Elimination round at Mohawk, Daylon Magician is two-for-two this season and boosted his lifetime earnings to $310,300 with Monday’s victory.

Daylon Magician and his peers will have their second shot at Ontario Sires Stakes glory on July 2 at Georgian Downs, but Mohawk fans will see many of the provincial stalwarts try their hand against open competition in the Goodtimes Stake Eliminations on June 11, hoping to advance onto the final one week later.
