DUNDAS, ON — Warrawee Needy extended his Gold Series unbeaten streak to five with an Ontario Sires Stakes record performance at Flamboro Downs on Sunday evening.
Starting from Post 2 in the first of three $40,000 Gold Eliminations for the freshman pacing colts, driver Jody Jamieson settled Warrawee Needy in third through the early going, tucked in behind pacesetter Shore Light and Fenian Hanover. The heavy favourites sat contentedly through a :27.1 quarter and a :57.1 half and then sailed by the frontrunners to take a four length lead by the 1:25.2 three-quarters.
Six lengths on top when they turned for home, Jamieson and Warrawee Needy hit the wire a full nine lengths ahead of Fenian Hanover and 19 ahead of third-place finisher Aslan. The pair tripped the teletimer at 1:53.3, shaving one-fifth of a second of the former OSS record first set by Sir Luck at Flamboro in 2002 and matched by Nebupanezzar over the Dundas half-mile in 2008.
Princeton resident Carl Jamieson conditions Warrawee Needy for his partners Thomas Kyron of Toronto, breeder Dr. Michael Wilson of Rockwood and Floyd Marshall of Jarvis. Through eight starts the E Dees Cam son has only been bested once, settling for third in last week’s Battle of Waterloo Final at Grand River Raceway.
Warrawee Needy will be hampered by the outside Post 8 in his effort to earn a third Gold Final trophy during next Sunday’s Confederation Cup program.
The second two-year-old pacing colt Gold Elimination was captured by Randy Waples and I Found My Beach, who matched the old OSS record with their 1:53.4 clocking. The pair rocketed down the stretch past Battle of Waterloo winner Machapelo — who had a five length lead at the three-quarter mile pole when Waples tipped I Found My Beach out three-wide — to claim the half length victory. Machapelo settled for second, with Addwater 10 lengths back in third.
Hall of Fame horseman Bob McIntosh of Windsor shares ownership of I Found My Beach with breeder Robert Kauffman of New Albany, Ohio. McIntosh prepped the Mach Three colt for his Gold Series debut with a pair of overnights at Mohawk Racetrack on July 22 and Aug. 1, where I Found My Beach logged a second and a win.
Waples will steer I Found My Beach from Post 4 in next Sunday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
The last freshman pacing colt Gold Elimination was also captured by a son of Mach Three — giving the stallion a grand total of seven starters in next weekend’s Gold Final.
Hard To Mach and Anthony MacDonald swept to the lead heading by the three-quarters and rolled home to a seven and one-half length victory over Winbak Warrior and Noble Andrew in 1:55. Maurice Goldschmidt trains the son of Mach Three and Angel in Disguise for Lindsey and Connie Rankin of Lexington, MI.
MacDonald and Hard To Mach get Post 5 for their Gold Final debut next weekend.
In the three-year-old trotting colt Gold Eliminations also contested at Flamboro on Sunday, Undercover Strike captured the first split, touring the half-mile oval in a personal best 1:55.1. Luc Ouellette engineered the front-end effort for trainer William Companion and owners Common Sense Stable of Rockwood, KOR Stable Limited of Guelph and Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, AB.
Fan favourite and reigning Gold Final champion Tamarind finished five and three-quarter lengths back in second, with Mr Joe Sixpack in third and Sim Brown rounding out the Gold Final qualifiers from fourth.
Division leaders Daylon Magician and Jack Moiesyev captured the other trotting colt elimination, cruising to a three length score over Imperial Count, Delcrest Julian and Lakefield in 1:55.
David Lemon bred, owns and trains Daylon Magician, who has six wins in eight starts this season for earnings of $240,477, giving him a two season total of $465,777. The Kadabra son’s only defeat in Gold Series action this season was in the July 9 Gold Final at Georgian Downs won by Tamarind.
Elimination winners Daylon Magician and Undercover Strike will start from Posts 1 and 4 in next Sunday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
