ELORA, ON — If it is true that there are horses for courses’, then Prodigal Seelster owns Grand River Raceway.

Making the third appearance of his career at the Elora oval on Wednesday evening, the three-year-old pacing colt sprinted away from a field of his peers to a five length victory in a track record 1:52.2. At two Prodigal Seelster captured the track’s signature event, the Battle Of Waterloo, by four and one-half lengths in a track record 1:53.2.

Scott Zeron engineered Wednesday’s Gold Final victory, which saw Prodigal Seelster move sharply away from Post 4 and hover briefly in second as Dr Dew led the field of seven sophomore pacers to a :27.1 opening quarter. The fan favourite was on the front end before the :55.3 half and maintained a one and one-half length lead over Dr Dew past the 1:23.4 three-quarters.

Around the final turn Zeron let Prodigal Seelster fly and the Camluck colt paced home an effortless five length winner in the track record 1:52.2, peeling two-fifths of a second off the old mark set by Primary Purpose in 2009. Bullet Speed overtook the pocket sitter in the stretch to earn second-place honours, leaving Dr Dew to settle for third.

With only eight colts entering the fourth Gold Series event of the season, no eliminations were required last week, so Wednesday’s event was worth a healthy $170,000. Prodigal Seelster’s share boosted the colt’s sophomore earnings to $412,422 for delighted owners Ken Ewen of Georgetown, Larry Menary of Cheltenham, Denis Breton of Welland and Double Or Nothing Stables of Hamilton.

David Menary conditions Prodigal Seelster, who now boasts a record of six wins, two seconds and three thirds in 14 starts. Wednesday’s triumph was the colt’s second straight Gold Final victory and his second straight track record performance. He captured the Sept. 1 Gold Final at Kawartha Downs in a track record, and personal best, 1:50.1.

With track records on half and five-eighths mile tracks, Prodigal Seelster will have an opportunity to add a seven-eighths mile credit to his resume when the three-year-old pacing colts head to Woodbine Racetrack on Oct. 8 and 15 for their last regular season Gold Series test. The colt’s 274 points have him well out in front of the division standings, giving him a second opportunity at a speed tab on the larger oval in the $300,000 Super Final at Woodbine on Nov. 12.

Grand River Raceway has one more Gold Final event for fans this week as three-year-old trotting colt superstar Daylon Magician puts his six race win streak on the line this Friday, Sept. 30. Post time for Friday’s program is 7:10 pm and Daylon Magician and his peers will battle for Gold Final supremacy in Race 9.
