ELORA, ON — Battle Of The Belles champion Macharoundtheclock returns to Grand River Raceway on Friday evening hoping to find her way back to the winner’s circle in the second of two $40,000 Gold Eliminations.
Since her stakes record equaling performance in the Aug. 6 Battle Of The Belles Final Macharoundtheclock has been battling against the top two-year-old pacing fillies in North America. Second in her division of the Eternal Camnation and her Shes A Great Lady elimination on Aug. 18 and 25 at Mohawk Racetrack, the Mach Three daughter finished tenth in last weekend’s Shes A Great Lady Final off a tough trip from Post 8.
“We’re back to Elora. We had more luck there than we’ve had since,” notes the filly’s co-owner Kenneth Ewen.
“She had the eight-hole and that post position works against you right off the bat,” says the Georgetown resident of the Shes A Great Lady Final. “She never found the rail all the way around. That makes it tough.”
Ewen says reports from trainer Dave Menary indicate that Macharoundtheclock recovered well from the tough Shes A Great Lady trip and should be ready to battle in her Gold Series debut at Grand River on Friday.
“She hasn’t had an OSS start yet,” notes Ewen, who shares ownership of the filly with the trainer and his father Larry Menary of Cheltenham and Denis Breton of Welland. “We thought we’d better get one or two in before it’s too late.”
Macharoundtheclock will make her provincial debut from Post 4 in the ninth race, looking to earn a few points toward a berth in the season ending Super Final. Through her six starts to date the daughter of Mach Three and $110,068 winner Summers Soul has amassed one win, three seconds and earnings of $123,627.
The half-sister to four $100,000-plus winners was a $50,000 purchase at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale, and Ewen says trainer Menary was responsible for selecting the youngster.
“I have to give Dave the credit for picking her out, no doubt about that,” says Ewen. “He’s pretty good at picking them out.
“All the partners take a look beforehand and decide how much money each one wants to throw into the pot,” continues the longtime owner, noting that the group has enjoyed previous success in the Ontario Sires Stakes program with horses like two-time division champion, and 2010 Battle Of Waterloo winner, Prodigal Seelster.
Ewen will be on hand for Macharoundtheclock’s Ontario Sires Stakes debut on Friday and hopes the filly can take advantage of the smaller field. Only six fillies will battle in each $40,000 Gold Elimination, with the top four from each division returning to the Elora oval on Sept. 14 for the third $130,000 Gold Final on their schedule.
The first elimination goes postward as Race 5 and features reigning Gold Final champion Right On Molly, who will make her bid for a fourth straight victory from Post 3, and Battle Of The Belles runner-ups Raise Your Glass and Its No Secret from Posts 2 and 1, respectively.
Grand River Raceway sends its first race into the starter’s hands at 7:05 pm on Friday, turning the spotlight on the two-year-old pacing fillies in Races 5 and 9.
