CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Falcon Justice enjoyed the fairest weather and fastest surface at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday, July 8 and the two-year-old pacing colt took full advantage, employing a sharp finishing kick to capture the first of four Gold Series divisions.
After sitting seventh through much of the mile, Falcon Justice shifted into high gear in the stretch and laid down a :26.3 final quarter to reel in the leaders and reach the wire three-quarter lengths ahead of his peers in 1:53.2. Paul MacDonell of Guelph piloted the Mister Big gelding to the win for trainer Rod Boyd of Cambridge and his partner Dan Christiano Cox of Toronto.
Things had turned sloppy by the time the second Gold division lined up behind the starting gate and Guelph resident Doug McNair kept the mud of his face with a front end trip aboard fan favourite Crafty Master. The pair reached the wire four and one-half lengths on top in 1:54, over a track rated one second slower than normal.
It was the second straight win for Crafty Master, who captured his Grassroots division at Mohawk on June 27. Gregg McNair of Guelph conditions the colt, another son of Mister Big, for Robert Hamather of Exeter.
The McNair’s teamed up for a second win in the final division, landing Three Of Clubs in the winner’s circle off another front end tour. The Mach Three son stopped the clock at 1:54.1 for Gregg McNair and his partners Tony Lawrence of Hanover and Shady Hill Racing Stable of Durham.
Twin B Spy took the other division after a sloppy pocket trip behind favourite Cluster Hanover. Twin B Spy and driver Scott Zeron of Oakville overtook the pacesetter in the stretch and cruised home three and three-quarter length winners in 1:53.3. Cambridge resident Casie Coleman trains Shadow Play son Twin B Spy for her partners Mac Nichol of Burlington and Adriano Sorella of Milton.
The two-year-old pacing colts make their next start at Mohawk Racetrack on July 19, when the top 20 point earners will battle in the first Mid-Summer Challenge. Ontario Sires Stakes action returns to Mohawk Racetrack on Monday, July 15 with the second Grassroots event for the two-year-old trotting colts.
