The very first Ontario Sires Stakes event of the 2014 season, for the glamour boy division, gets underway Friday night at The Raceway in three $70,000 Gold divisions carded as races nine, 10 and 11 on the card.
Bugger Bruiser, the richest performer in this division last season, will make his three-year-old debut in the second split. Carmen Auciello, who earlier this week was crowned the top trainer at Woodbine’s winter/spring meet, trains the gelding who ended his rookie season on a four race winning streak that included two OSS Gold events and the Super Final at Mohawk in late September, his final freshman start.
Owned by Rocco Auciello and Denarben Stables, Bugger Bruiser took in $225,000 last season. His sire is Believeinbruiser, a Mach Three horse who earned $249,000 during his career which included several OSS starts.
Bugger Bruiser has drawn post seven with Anthony MacDonald, his regular pilot, down to drive.
Also in that split is Three Of Clubs, last year’s Battle Of Waterloo winner. Trainer Gregg McNair co-owns the talented Mach Three colt with legendary horseman Keith Waples and Tony Lawrence.
McNair’s son Doug will drive the winner of $206,000 last season from post eight.
Last year’s Metro Pace champion, Boomboom Ballykeel, will leave from post five in the first split, race nine. The Mach Three son, who won $389,000 last year, will have Sylvain Filion at the controls for owner/breeder Ballykeel Racing of Tillsonburg.
Last year Dr. Ian Moore had one of the stars of this division in Arthur Blue Chip whose three-year-old season has been delayed due to injury. However, Dr. Moore still has two colts by his former champion Shadow Play to represent him in OSS action.
Play It Again Sam will leave from post eight, the trailing spot at the London half-miler, with Jody Jamieson slated to steer.
It will be the first Ontario start for the sophomore who won on May 11 at Truro Raceway in the Maritimes before shipping east. An OSS winner last season, Play It Again Sam took in $98,000 last year for Maritime owners Eric Whebby and RG McGroup Ltd.
Moore also starts Silverheel Shadow in the second division from post six. Owned by breeder Silverhill of PEI, the colt finished a close second in his most recent start, the Diplomat final at Woodbine on May 10.
