CLINTON, ON — Acceptable Risk provided his new owners with a quick return on their investment when he captured his Grassroots division at Clinton Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
The aptly named colt and driver Randy Fritz tucked in behind Everybody’s Pal through fractions of :29.2, :59.1 and 1:28.4 before reeling in the pacesetter down the stretch and hitting the wire two and three-quarter lengths on top in 1:58.4.
Everybody’s Pal, owned by Todd Struthers of Holyrood, Kenneth Houston of Harriston, trainer Richard McGlynn of Mount Forest and Robert Sinclair of Elmira, held on for second, while King Joe settled for third after spending most of the mile parked on the outside.
David Morrissey of Ailsa Craig and Daniel McCann and William Woodburn of Parkhill acquired Acceptable Risk just over a week ago after watching the Intrepid Seelster colt win a division of the July 2 Grassroots season opener at Hanover Raceway. The group opted to leave the young pacer in the care of former owner and breeder Fred Drouillard, which proved to be an astute move as Acceptable Risk paced to one of the fastest miles of the ten Grassroots divisions at Clinton.
Mythic Voyage recorded the other 1:58.4 mile, with Randy Fritz’s elder brother Terry in the race bike. The Grinfromeartoear son led throughout the mile, carving fractions of :28, :59.1 and 1:29.1, on his way to the two and a half length win over Taylorlane Cruiser and Gin And Vermouth.
Robert Atkin trains Mythic Voyage for breeders Millar Farms of Newmarket. Sunday’s start was the colt’s first after a pair of solid qualifiers at Mohawk Racetrack over the last two weeks.
Reigning Lampman Cup titleholder Jody Jamieson boosted his standings in this year’s point race with a pair of wins, one second and two thirds aboard colts trained by his father Carl. The young reinsman made his first appearance in Clinton’s winner’s circle with Boom Hereicome, leading from start to finish in the 2:02.1 mile. First time starter Boom Hereicome led a sweep of the top three by sons of Astreos, with Actor earning the runner-up’s share and Ouzo landing in third.
Princeton resident Carl Jamieson shares ownership on Boom Hereicome with Robert McKrow of Mississauga and Universal Settlements Inc., Waterloo.
The Jamieson’s were back in front of the track photographer following Race 7 with Fully Loaded son Don’t Make Waves. Using a similar strategy, Don’t Make Waves did all the hard work on the front end and paced away to a one and three-quarter victory in 1:59.3 for Carl Jamieson, the George Arthur Stable of Milton and Robin Raine of Cumbria, ENG.
Underground King, owned by Dr. Norman Amos of St. Marys, Bill Elliott of Thorndale and Murray Neilson of London, pressed the pace but had to settle for second. Sauble Justy rounded out the top three.
Driver Reg Gassien and trainer Jim Ainsworth also teamed up for a pair of victories on Sunday’s Grassroots program. Snap Out Of It logged his first win in three tries with a gritty 2:01.3 effort in Race 5. After sitting on the outside throughout the mile Snap Out Of It accelerated down the stretch to claim the one and three-quarter length victory over Dextra Effort and Ancient Highway.
Sarnia resident Ainsworth shares ownership on the Camluck son with Gassien, who makes his home in Lindsay, Claude Pearson of Tilbury and William Boden of Vancouver, BC.
Gassien and Ainsworth made it a double with Kevin Supreme in Race 9. The Dexter Nukes son, owned by Larry Ainsworth of Petrolia, Martwest Racing Stable of Mississauga and Pearson, cruised to a front end victory in 1:59.3 besting favourite Whitesand Jester and Marcus the Brut.
The other Grassroots divisions went to Dreamluck, owned and trained by St. Mary’s resident Mark Horner, in 1:59.1, Winbak Noah in 1:59.3, Sauble Keith in 2:00.4 and Rustlin Goodtime, who finished second but was placed ahead to first when the leader made a late break.
Ontario’s talented two-year-old pacing colts make their third Grassroots start Aug. 20 at Sudbury Downs. Clinton Raceway plays host to the third three-year-old trotting filly Grassroots event on Sunday, July 31.
