CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Alastor Hanover got another flawless drive from Mario Baillargeon at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening to record his third straight victory and earn his first Gold Final title.
Leaving from Post 5, Baillargeon settled Alastor Hanover in fifth on the rail as Wingandaprayer battled Northern Cowboy for control going to the :27 opening quarter. While Baillargeon sat quietly on the rail in fourth with Alastor Hanover, elimination winner U Lucky Guy circled to the front and led the field of two-year-old pacing colts to a :55.4 half and 1:24 three-quarters.
As the colts swept around the final turn Baillargeon finally made his move and Alastor Hanover was on top by one and a half lengths by the time he turned for home. A :28.4 final quarter ensured that none of his peers could catch him, and the Rustler Hanover son swept under the wire four and a half lengths to the good in 1:53.
For the second week in a row, Spokesman closed like a shot to claim the runner-up spot, and elimination winner Streak Of Luck was another length back in third.
Mark Ford trains Alastor Hanover for owner Vicki Fair of Bedford, PA, who acquired the colt for $13,000 US at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, then handed him off to Pennsylvania based trainer Roger Hammer to develop. Hammer started the talented young pacer four times at The Meadows before shipping him north to Ford. Since he arrived in Ford’s barn Alastor Hanover has recorded one fifth and three straight victories, giving Fair a $90,197 return on her investment through eight starts.
Mohawk fans have been impressed with Alastor Hanover since he made his debut over the Campbellville surface in a two-year-old open event on July 4 and made him their top choice for the third week in a row. The colt repaid his faithful fans with a $7.20 win pay out, a $3.60 return on a place wager and a $2.70 show ticket profit. Spokesman was the second choice and paid $4.20 to place and $3.30 to show, while fourth choice Streak Of Luck returned $2.60 to show.
The Alastor Hanover – Spokesman exactor paid $28.20 and the triactor was worth $91.50. Fans who accurately predicted the top three finishers and slotted U Lucky Guy in for fourth earned $161.35 on their superfecta wager.
Many of the top Ontario-sired colts will make their next start in Grand River Raceway’s Battle of Waterloo Eliminations on Monday, July 25. The freshman pacing colts do not return to Gold Series action until Aug. 13 when they take their speed show to Flamboro Downs.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement is back at Mohawk Racetrack on Civic Holiday Monday, Aug. 1, with Gold Series Eliminations for the impressive two-year-old pacing fillies.
