WINDSOR, ON — Alastor Hanover continued to steamroll through the two-year-old pacing colt division, capturing his third Gold Final trophy in record setting fashion on Sunday evening at Windsor Raceway.

Alastor Hanover and driver Mario Baillargeon landed in fourth spot from Post 7, as elimination winner Spokesman took the field of nine to a :26.3 opening quarter. Spokesman hit the half in :55.2, but Alastor Hanover was breathing down his neck and had a nose in front by the time they hit the 1:23 three-quarters. The pair continued to battle around the final turn, but Alastor Hanover dug in down the stretch and pulled out a one length victory in 1:52.3.

Spokesman earned the second-place finisher’s share of the $130,000 purse and the other elimination winner, Mister Big, paced home two lengths behind the leaders in third. Button Up, owned by Steve Calhoun of Chatham and trainer Mark Horner of St. Marys, finished fourth.

The 1:52.3 mile shaved one-fifth of a second off Windsor’s former track record for two-year-old pacing colts, set by Pacific Titan in 2001, and equalled the Ontario Sires Stakes record established by Isle Of Patmos at Rideau Carleton Raceway in 2004.

Alastor Hanover is now undefeated through seven starts, including three Gold Eliminations and three Gold Finals. Mark Ford trains the Rustler Hanover son for Vicki Fair of Bedford, PA, who acquired the colt for a mere $13,000 at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale. Through 12 starts the young pacer has earned $253,704.

On the strength of last week’s elimination win and his sterling race record, Windsor Raceway fans sent Alastor Hanover off as the prohibitive favourite Sunday. The colt returned $3.30 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.20 to show. Second choice Spokesman paid $3.10 on a place wager and $2.80 for each show voucher, and fourth choice Mister Big delivered a $3.80 show pay out. The exactor returned $5.90 and grouping the elimination winners on a triactor wager earned fans $23.90.

Sunday’s outcome did not alter the composition of the top 10 point earners, leaving the colts hovering just below the current cut off for the Super Final one last chance to oust the leaders and claim a spot on the starting gate for the $300,000 season finale. The freshman pacing colts’ last Gold Series event goes postward Oct. 29 at Woodbine Racetrack.

Ontario Sires Stakes excitement returns to Windsor Raceway on Sunday, Oct. 23 when the three-year-old trotting colts arrive at the border oval to compete in their last regular season Gold event.
