INNISFIL, ON — Dave Boughton was impressed with B Cor Rennegade after his qualifier and Tuesday evening’s victory in Gold Elimination action at Georgian Downs did nothing to diminish the veteran reinsman’s regard for the two-year-old trotting gelding.
As he did in the June 28 qualifier, Boughton floated B Cor Rennegade off the starting gate in Race 8 and landed in seventh spot along the rail. Fan favourite Pass And Strike was laying down the fractions on the front end and Boughton was content to sit as the colts flashed through a :29.4 opening quarter and the :59.4 half. Heading toward the three-quarter mile marker Boughton made a move to the outside and when the leader clicked the teletimer over at 1:30.1, B Cor Rennegade was circling horses three wide on his way to the front.
One length behind as the colts straightened out for home, B Cor Rennegade trotted strongly down the stretch to record a the fastest victory of the four Gold Eliminations, hitting the wire one and a quarter lengths up on Pass And Strike in 2:00.2. Quantum The King was well out of hailing distance of the leaders in third and did not get a lucky break in the draw for the last spot in next week’s Gold Final, earning the second Also Eligible position.
Boughton drives B Cor Rennegade for trainer Garth Gordon of Guelph and his partners Jean Brechkow of Amherstburg, Bobby Brown of Kingsville and James Walker of Port Perry. The group acquired the talented youngster at last fall’s Canadian Classic Yearling Sale for just $9,000 and are $4,420 in the black after just one start.
Onearmbandit was the only favourite to get the job done in Tuesday’s Gold Elimination action. The Angus Hall son and trainer-driver Bradley Kramer wasted no time getting to the top from Post 4 and controlled the pace throughout the 2:01.1 mile.
Simple Life finished two lengths back in second and Let’s Get Er Done was three more lengths back in third. Onearmbandit and Simple Life will return to Georgian Downs next Tuesday for the $130,000 Gold Final, while Let’s Get Er Done drew the first Also Eligible position.
Veteran reinsman Bill O’Donnell crafted a pocket trip for Indiana Hall in the first elimination, tucking in behind pacesetter Cajabreak past the quarter mile pole and then sprinting down the stretch to the 2:01.4 victory.
C. and I. Siegel Racing Stable of Staten Island, NY own Indiana Hall, a $14,000 yearling at the Tattersalls Sale last fall, and Susanne Kerwood handles training duties on the Striking Sahbra son.
High priced yearling, and fan favourite, Campbell Hall settled for second after being interfered with at the three-quarter pole and Cajabreak rounded out the top three, but did not advance to the Final, drawing the third Also Eligible spot.
The last three spots in next Tuesday’s Gold Final went to Mr Ontario, Yorktown Gunner and Chosen Voyageur, who marched in an orderly fashion across the finish line in the ninth race.
Paul MacDonell was in the race bike behind Mr Ontario, who overcame the outside Post 9 to capture the one and a half length victory in 2:01.4 for trainer David Menary and Larry Menary of Cheltenham and Todd and John Gimblett of Whitby.
The colts return to Georgian Downs next Tuesday for their first taste of Gold Final action and will line up along the starting gate in the following order:
Post 1 Chosen Voyageur
Post 2 Simple Life
Post 3 B Cor Rennegade
Post 4 Pass And Strike
Post 5 Mr Ontario
Post 6 Onearmbandit
Post 7 Yorktown Gunner
