WINDSOR, ON — Windsor Raceway fans were treated to pair of exceptional performances by the two-year-old pacing fillies on Wednesday evening, as fan favourites Bay Girl and Western Silk cruised to victory in Gold Elimination action.
In the first $40,000 Gold Elimination, Bay Girl and driver Mario Baillargeon fired to the front from Post 5 and had established a two length lead by the :27.2 opening quarter. The Royal Mattjesty daughter continued to march along in front through a :56.4 half and a 1:24.4 three-quarters, and then accelerated down the stretch to a three and one-quarter length victory over Exotic Pleasure and Lyons Anitacol.
Wednesday’s 1:54 victory marked the filly’s third elimination win in three tries. Bay Girl also boasts a Gold Final trophy in her collection, capturing the Aug. 16 final at Mohawk Racetrack in a personal best 1:52.2.
Milton resident Ben Wallace trains Bay Girl for Michael, Sam and Pat Sergi of Canton, NY, who acquired the talented youngster for just $7,000 at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale. Through eight starts Bay Girl has never missed the top three, delivering four wins, two seconds and two thirds and banking $186,722.
Also advancing to next week’s $130,000 Gold Final from the first elimination were fourth-place finisher Kims Quest and fifth-place finisher Misty Moonstone.
The second Gold Elimination saw reigning Gold Final champion Western Silk cruise home a three and one-quarter length winner in 1:54.1. The Western Terror daughter and driver Mark MacDonald wrestled control away from FBs Terror just past the :28 opening quarter, and then sailed along to a :57.4 half and a 1:26.3 three-quarters on their way to the winner’s circle.
FBs Terror enjoyed a pocket ride to the runner-up spot, with third and fourth-place finishers Sweetest Smile and Ice Ice Baby rounding out the Gold Final qualifiers.
Through nine starts, the Casie Coleman trainee has four wins, one second and two thirds to her credit for earnings of $156,932. Cambridge resident Coleman shares ownership of Western Silk with Tom Hill of Lancashire, GB. The partners offered up $50,000 to acquire the first foal from $111,847 winner Extemporaneous at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.
