INNISFIL, ON — Sunderland resident Murray Brethour took home a pair of Grassroots trophies from Georgian Downs on Tuesday, July 2.
The trainer sent out four freshman pacing fillies in the Grassroots season opener and enjoyed immediate success, capturing the first $18,000 division with Murrayfield. Oakville resident Rick Zeron piloted Murrayfield to the commanding victory, which saw her reach the wire three and three-quarter lengths ahead of her peers in a clocking of 1:56.
Brethour conditions the Jeremes Jet daughter for owner-breeder Dr. Huw Llewellyn of Allenford.
The second Brethour trainee to reach the winner’s circle was Catwoman in the fourth division. With Milton resident Sylvain Filion in the race bike Catwoman paced home to a three-quarter length victory in 1:57.4. Another daughter of Jeremes Jet, Catwoman is owned by Brethour, breeder David Heffering of Port Perry and Douglas Millard of Woodstock.
Brethour’s other starters, Girlsgotmachzie and Justabit Mean, finished seventh and second, respectively, in their divisions.
The other Grassroots divisions were captured by Lady Shadow, Ramblin Rose, and Badlyinclined.
The two-year-old pacing fillies will return to Georgian Downs in one week — Tuesday, July 9 — for their second Grassroots start.
This Saturday, July 6, Georgian Downs fans can catch the second Grassroots start for the two-year-old pacing colts, with racing action getting under way at 7:25 pm.
