DRESDEN, ON — Got The Munchies delivered a sweet mile in the first of seven $15,428 Grassroots divisions at Dresden Raceway on Monday afternoon.
The two-year-old pacing filly ate up ground in the stretch to snatch a half length victory away from Elate Hanover and pacesetter Tennessee Starlit, stopping the clock in 1:58.1. Jody Jamieson piloted the Camluck filly to the victory for trainer Carl Jamieson and owner Richard Buchanan of St. George Brant.
Monday’s victory was Got The Munchies’ second straight in Grassroots action, and added to the third she posted in her provincial debut, puts her in a three-way tie for third in the division standings with just two regular season events remaining.
Jody Jamieson currently sits second in the Ontario Sires Stakes driver’s standings, but Jason Brewer decided to give the three-time Lampman Cup winner a run for his money on Monday, posting four victories in the last four Grassroots divisions.
After two thirds and one fourth in the first three provincial contests, Brewer guided Its About Motion to a 2:00.1 victory in Race 6. The Your Nemesis daughter led the field to a :28.4 opening quarter and then battled a determined Slaley right to the wire. In spite of her tenacity, Slaley had to settle for second, a half length behind Its About Motion, while Caseys Acquisition was another length back in third.
Stephen Gillard of Tavistock bred, owns and trains Its About Motion, who now has two wins and one third to her credit through three Grassroots starts, putting her in a tie for third with Got The Munchies and Tennessee Starlit.
Brewer’s second appearance in the Dresden winner’s circle came one race later when he fired Casimir Hugs off the wings and led the field to a four length victory in 2:01. Daisy Baraness and Miss Fortunate picked up the second and third-place finisher’s spoils.
Bill Budd trains Casimir Hugs for breeder Casimir Stables of Hagar and Sam Taylor of Millbrook. Monday’s victory was the Sir Luck daughter’s first through seven starts and bumped her into the top 16 with a total of 88 points.
Rambaran Star scored her second victory in just three starts in Race 9, delivering an impressive come from behind effort to post a 1:59.1 personal best. Favourite Stylish Fit finished two lengths behind and Jody Jamieson and Torrid Pace rounded out the top three.
Brewer guided the daughter of Rambaran and Matts Miss to the win for trainer Paul Taylor and owner-breeder Dan Sergeant of Straffordville.
In the last split, Brewer replicated the come from behind trip he carved out for Rambaran Star, and landed St Lads Seraph in the winners circle for the first time. The Northern Luck daughter hit the wire in a smart 1:59.4, two lengths ahead of Chesapeake Summer and favourite Astreas Notice.
Windsor resident Sandra Spencer trains St Lads Seraph for her partner Kathleen Brogan of Windsor. Through three Grassroots starts the filly has now delivered one win, one second and one third to boost her into a tie for eighth in the division point race.
The other Grassroots divisions were captured by In The Bedroom in 2:01.1, and Haganah in 2:01.2.
Ontario’s talented young pacing fillies will make their second last regular season start on Sept. 25 over Georgian Downs’ five-eighths mile oval.
Monday’s Grassroots battle wrapped up Dresden Raceway’s 2007 Ontario Sires Stakes season, which saw Quintessential K lower the two-year-old trotting filly track record in Grassroots action on Aug. 6. The provincial program will return to Dresden next spring with another talented group of trotters and pacers eager to make their mark at the historic half-mile.
