CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Sophomore trotting filly Brigham Dream used a classic pocket trip as a springboard to an Ontario Sires Stakes record performance in Monday’s $130,000 Gold Final at Mohawk Racetrack.
Starting from Post 6, driver Jean Pierre Dubois fired Brigham Dream off the gate and settled in behind early leader J M Aggie, who took the field of ten to a :27.4 opening quarter. While J M Aggie toiled on the front to a :57.2 half, Brigham Dream cruised along behind her, waiting until the field was heading for the 1:25.4 three-quarters to step to the outside in front of former Gold Final winner Carolyn AS.
Powering around the final turn, Brigham Dream turned for home two lengths ahead of Maple Sugar and continued to accelerate down the stretch to a two and three-quarter length victory in an Ontario Sires Stakes record 1:53.4. Carolyn AS closed like a sprinter to claim the runner-up’s share of the Gold Final pie, elbowing Maple Sugar into third.
Brigham Dream’s victory shaved one-fifth of a second off the former 1:54 Ontario Sires Stakes record set by the newly retired Peaceful Way in 2004.
Nicolas Vandenplas trains Brigham Dream for owner-breeders Reve Avec Moi/Dream With Me stable of Brigham, QC. Since making a victorious sophomore debut at The Red Mile in Lexington, KY on May 28, the daughter of Kaisy Dream and Crystas Image has amassed a record of six wins in eight starts for earnings of $136,578.
In addition to her early season win in Lexington, the talented youngster was a Gold Elimination winner in the season opener at Georgian Downs on June 23, captured two contests at Hippodrome de Montreal in August and September, and was victorious in her elimination at Mohawk last week.
In addition to etching her name into the Ontario Sires Stakes record books, Monday’s triumph propelled Brigham Dream into second spot in the three-year-old trotting filly standings with a total of 150 points, 50 points behind leader Carolyn AS, guaranteeing her a berth in the Nov. 10 Super Final.
The fillies have one last opportunity to add to their point totals, wrapping up the regular season at Windsor Raceway on Oct. 21 and 28.
Mohawk Racetrack hosts one last Ontario Sires Stakes event next Monday, Oct. 8 when the two-year-old pacing colts will battle in Gold Elimination action at the Campbellville oval, and then head to Woodbine Racetrack for the Oct. 15 final.
