HANOVER, ON — Another talented group of freshmen are headed to Hanover Raceway on Wednesday night, ready to battle for a total of $70,000 in five Trillium Series divisions.
Among the two-year-old trotting fillies looking to add a Trillium win to her resume is Nick Henry trainee C H Meadow Miss, who rolls into the third division off an effortless front-end win in Grassroots action at Sudbury Downs on July 31.
“In Sudbury the only reason she went to the front was because she made it so easy. I decided to float her into the turn because so many had made breaks in the earlier divisions and she just kind of ended up there,” says Henry of the filly’s 2:08.2 triumph. “Hanover will likely be the same, I won’t be gunning it out of there. I don’t want to leave with her every time.”
The Mount Forest resident and Ron Corbett of St. Jacobs bred and own C H Meadow Miss, the first foal out of their former racemare Marilyn Seelster who was a Grassroots winner at three. The pair started the filly at the Gold Series level on July 5 at Mohawk Racetrack and the CR Renegade daughter did not embarrass herself, finishing fifth in the 2:00.2 mile. C H Meadow Miss’s second start came in a July 19 Trillium event at Kawartha Downs where she finished second by a length to Gold Elimination winner Oaklea Omega.
With two solid efforts against the top fillies under her belt, Henry and Corbett opted not to chase the Gold Series to Ottawa’s Rideau Carleton Raceway and headed for the Grassroots in Sudbury where C H Meadow Miss logged her first victory.
“After the Gold we raced her in the Trillium, and she raced equally well, but we thought we’d see if we could try some softer competition,” explains Henry. “It’s pretty early in the season.”
While veteran reinsman Steve Condren piloted the filly in her first two starts, Henry picked up the lines for the Sudbury outing and will be back in the race bike from Post 3 on Wednesday.
“She’s real sensible and easy to manage. She’s real easy to drive. That was her mother’s problem, she wasn’t so manageable,” says the young horseman. “(Steve) Condren drove her twice, and he said we’d have a lot of fun with her.”
C H Meadow Miss’s early season success is all the more satisfying for Henry and Corbett, who wondered if the filly would even see her two-year-old year when she proved to be a handful to work with in her first few weeks of lessons.
“She was a good looking yearling, but hard to break. She was pretty reluctant to do anything right at the start. Her mother was a bit that way too,” recalls Henry. “It was about 10 days of bad and then she just seemed to get over it one day, decided that she wasn’t going to fight it any more. She’s just a sweetheart now.”
Among the fillies that Henry and C H Meadow Miss will meet in Wednesday’s Trillium event are July 19 Trillium winner Bernice Daniece, owned and bred by Gwendolyn McNair of Walkerton, who will start from Post 5, and two-time Grassroots winner CS R Hope, trained by Henry’s grandfather Ross Henry and owned by Henry Stable of Arthur, who will start from Post 6.
Hanover Raceway’s Wednesday evening program begins at 7:20 pm and the two-year-old trotting fillies will step into the spotlight in Races 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.
