DUNDAS, ON — An accident in the second of three Gold Eliminations at Flamboro Downs clouded the otherwise impressive debut of the province’s top two-year-old pacing fillies on Friday evening.
Carl and Jody Jamieson opened the freshman Ontario Sires Stakes season with a victory in the first $40,000 elimination, teaming up to land Windsong Filou in the winner’s circle for the second time in as many tries.
Starting from Post 6, Jody Jamieson settled the Astreos daughter in fourth on the rail as Kesons Avaia arrived at the :28.2 opening quarter. Heading for the :57.1 half, fan favourite and Bud Light winner Northern Duchess took control and carried the field to a 1:27.3 third quarter. Heading down the backstretch for the second time Jamieson sent Windsong Filou up the outside and the filly was able to reel in Northern Duchess in the stretch and record the quarter length victory in 1:55.4.
Northern Duchess settled for second, with Pantecostal rounding out the top three.
Carl Jamieson trains Windsong Filou for his partners Thomas Kyron of Toronto, breeder William Loyens of London and Harry Loyens of Ilderton. The Princeton resident plucked the filly out of last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale for $39,000, and she has already earned $28,000 of that back in just two starts.
Two races later the Jamieson family was grateful to be watching from the sidelines as Cruiser Hudson, in rein to Jason Gilchrist, made a frightening break heading into the first turn which wreaked havoc on the remainder of the field. Taking the brunt of the blow were Spoiled Beach and driver Luc Ouellette. Spoiled Beach fell to the track and Ouellette is reported to have suffered a fracture in his left forearm.
Driver Scott Coulter was also unseated from Putnam Jordan in the accident, but was reported to have escaped with minor bumps and bruises. The horses involved were also fortunate to avoid any major injuries.
As a result of the accident and its impact on the field, the Ontario Racing Commission officials at Flamboro Downs declared the race a No Contest’ and delayed the post position draw for the Gold Final, which will now be made early next week.
Once their peers had been cared for and the young horses settled, the Jamieson’s turned their attention to Rossridge Emotion and the last Gold Elimination. With the advantageous Post 2, Jody Jamieson decided the safest place to be was on the front end and sent the Camotion daughter off the wings to a :28.2 opening quarter.
Cruising through a :58.3 half and 1:27.3 three-quarters without seeing a challenger, Rossridge Emotion dug in down the stretch to hang on for a nose victory in 1:57. High-priced yearling Rose Seelster closed hard to be second and Orally Yours picked up the third-place finisher’s share of the $40,000 Gold Elimination purse.
Rossridge Emotion is owned by Bonnie Rattray of Hamilton, Ross Ridge Stables of New Hamburg and Douglas Good and Ken Houston of Chatham.
Jody Jamieson now faces the choice of which filly to steer in next Friday’s $120,000 Gold Final at the Dundas oval. Post position may play a factor, so the Cambridge resident will also be awaiting the Ontario Racing Commission’s decision about how to proceed following the No Contest’ ruling. Details about the post position draw will be made available as soon as possible.
