CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Three months after she first earned it, the Gold Final crown has finally been jostled off the head of two-year-old pacing filly St Lads Popcorn, who could not overcome Post 9 at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening.
While the three-time Gold champion floundered at the rear of the field, fan favourite Shacked Up took command before the half-mile marker and cruised home a two length winner in a personal best 1:52.3. Icey Breeze closed hard to earn the runner-up portion of the $120,000 Gold Final purse, while Arts Star benefited from a pocket trip on the way to her third-place finish.
Northern Duchess and St Lads Popcorn, who started from Posts 10 and 9, sprinted home from ninth and tenth at the three-quarters to round out the top five.
Hall of Fame horseman John Campbell engineered the victory for Shacked Up, who recovered from a late break in last week’s elimination to earn her spot in Monday’s final. The Western Terror filly now boasts a record of four wins, one second and one third in six starts, for earnings of $132,800.
Bulletproof Enterprises of Boca Raton, FL own Shacked Up, and Richard Nifty’ Norman handles training duties on the precocious filly, who burst onto the Gold Series scene with a 1:52.4 victory in her Sept. 12 Gold Elimination, handing St Lads Popcorn her first defeat since July. Second to St Lads Popcorn in the Sept. 19 Gold Final, Shacked Up recovered from her uncharacteristic miscue to finish third in last week’s elimination, one and three-quarter lengths behind winner Cheap Motel.
Through four Gold Series starts the filly has accumulated 137 points and currently sits in second spot in the division standings, 151 points behind leader St Lads Popcorn.
Six fillies who did not qualify for the Gold Final battled in the $20,000 Gold Consolation on Monday, with fan favourite Alison Wonderpan reeling in pacesetter Dance With Me Dee in the stretch to claim a one and a half length victory in 1:53.3. Star Gazed paced into second, leaving Dance With Me Dee the third-place leavings.
Ervin Miller trains Alison Wonderpan for owner and breeder Peter Pan Stables Inc. of Pepper Pike, OH. The win marked the No Pan Intended daughter’s second visit to the winner’s circle through seven starts this season and boosted her bank balance to $24,000. The fifth foal of the great race mare Pan Yankees ($620,886), Alison Wonderpan was driven to victory at Mohawk on Monday by Cambridge resident Jody Jamieson.
The two-year-old pacing fillies will conclude their regular season at Western Fair Raceway on Oct. 31 and Nov. 8.
Monday’s contest wrapped up the summer season at Mohawk Racetrack, and Ontario Sires Stakes fans will be gearing up for the shift to Woodbine Racetrack, where the three-year-old pacing fillies will meet up for the final Gold event of their careers on Monday, Oct. 20.
