INNISFIL, ON — Freshman Grassroots champion Cams Macharena picked up her second victory on the three-year-old pacing filly provincial circuit with a 1:53.1 personal best at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening.
The Mach Three filly and driver Doug McNair employed a sharp finishing kick to reel in the leaders through the stretch and claim the three-quarter length victory over pacesetter and fan favourite Betit To Getit and pocketsitter Utica Bayama. McNair engineered the win for trainer Tony O’Sullivan of Cambridge and owner-breeders Chris Arold and Michael Drury of Strongsville, OH and Kenneth Kohut of Independence, OH.
With two regular season events remaining, Cams Macharena sits fourth in the race for one of 10 berths in this year’s Grassroots Championship.
Guelph resident McNair delivered a second Grassroots contestant to the winner’s circle following the seventh race. Picking up a catch drive aboard John Kopas trainee Selandia, McNair once again employed a come from behind strategy to earn the filly her first Grassroots victory. Selandia sailed by the leaders in the stretch, hitting the wire two and one-quarter lengths on top in a personal best 1:54.
Kopas trains the No Pan Intended daughter for Glengate Farms of Campbellville and LLK Stable of Mississauga.
The quickest of the five Grassroots divisions was clocked by Racey Miss and driver Scott Zeron, who hit the wire in an impressive 1:51.4. The win extends the filly’s flawless record in Grassroots action to three and puts her in second spot in the point standings. Mark Steacy trains the Shanghai Phil daughter for Hudson Standrdbrd Stb Inc. of Hudson, QC.
The other two divisions were captured by Lyonssweetie in 1:53 and division point leader Mattys Big Day in 1:54.2. The three-year-old pacing fillies make their fifth Grassroots start at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Aug. 29.
Next up on Georgian Downs’ Ontario Sires Stakes schedule are the three-year-old trotting fillies, competing in their second last regular season Gold event on Saturday, Aug. 24.
