DUNDAS, ON — Canadette emerged from her three week hiatus on Saturday afternoon at Flamboro Downs and the talented two-year-old pacing filly picked right up where she had left off, sailing to a five length win in the first of three $26,411 Trillium Series divisions.
Leaving from Post 1, Canadette made it clear from the first few strides that she was in the market for a fourth straight victory. The Mach Three daughter and regular reinsman Paul MacDonell were on top by one and three-quarter lengths as they cruised by the :28.2 opening quarter, and they maintained that margin through the :58.4 half and 1:28.4 three-quarters over a sloppy track rated three seconds slower than normal.
Turning for home Canadette had boosted her lead to two and one half lengths and by the time she cruised under the wire, stopping the teletimer at 1:57.4, runner-up Ja El Cash Advance was five and one-quarter lengths to the rear. Spun Sugar, owned by Bradley Grant of Milton, was one more length back in third.
The win was Canadette’s sixth this season and boosted her earnings through nine starts to $235,533 for owner and breeder Robert Chapple of Chatham. Gregg McNair of Guelph trains the talented daughter of former Ontario Sires Stakes star Legacy Of Fame.
The second Trillium division went to Angel In Motion and Mark MacDonald, who also used front-end tactics to log their 1:59.1 win. Whitesand Scarlet was two and a half lengths back in second, edging out a hard closing Just Her Way.
A Grassroots regular, Angel In Motion is trained by Jason Libby for owner and breeder Mervin Smith of Dorchester. The win improved the Camotion daughter’s record to two wins and one second in five starts.
Grassroots competitor Lil Motion scored her third straight victory with a 2:00.2 score in the last division, reeling in pacesetter and fan favourite Fysia in the stretch. One length separated the top two fillies while Mystically, owned by Sonny Wassilyn of Moffat, finished two and three-quarter lengths behind the winner in third.
Stephen Gillard of Tavistock bred, owns and trains Lil Motion. Mario Baillargeon piloted the Western Maverick daughter to the win on Saturday, boosting her record to three wins and one second in six starts. With two wins, one second and two fourths in Grassroots action, Lil Motion is ranked second in the division point standings with just one event remaining in the regular season.
Ontario’s talented two-year-old pacing fillies will make their last Grassroots start on Sept. 19 at Grand River Raceway, while Canadette will begin defence of her Gold Final title on Sept. 15 at Mohawk Racetrack. The fillies do not return to Trillium Series action until Oct. 26 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Ontario Sires Stakes action continues at Flamboro Downs on Saturday, Sept. 16, when the lightning fast three-year-old pacing colts bring their Grassroots show to the Dundas half-mile.
