WINDSOR, ON — Carolyn AS delivered an impressive five and one-quarter length victory in the first of two $53,000 Gold Eliminations at Windsor Raceway on Sunday evening, sprinting under the wire in a track record 1:56.
The three-year-old trotting filly took command of the race well before the half mile marker and never saw a challenger. Early leader J M Aggie sat behind Carolyn AS through the remainder of the mile, but could not keep up when the fan favourite revved her engine in the stretch. Maple Sugar narrowly edged out Sportyportia for third, and Caught My Eye was well back in fifth.
Casual Breeze set the former Windsor Raceway track record for three-year-old trotting fillies in 2000, circling the five-eighths mile oval in 1:56.3. In addition to her new Windsor record, Carolyn AS also shares ownership of the Ontario Sires Stakes record for sophomore trotting lasses on a half-mile track thanks to the 1:57.2 mile she delivered at Flamboro Downs in an Aug. 12 Gold Elimination.
Regular reinsman Jack Moiseyev piloted Carolyn AS to her sixth win in 10 starts this season for trainer Anette Lorentzon and owners ACL Stuteri Inc. of Paris, KY and Bill Justice of Lexington, KY. Sunday’s victory marked the Striking Sahbra daughter’s first visit to the winner’s circle since her Ontario Sires Stakes record equalling performance at Flamboro Downs.
The second elimination saw Jtlady Strong earn her first Ontario Sires Stakes trophy with a 1:57.3 score. Like Carolyn AS, Jtlady Strong started from Post 4 and sat in the middle of the pack through the early stages of the race.
Driver Allan Cullen sent Jtlady Strong after the lead heading for the :58 half and the Angus Hall miss had a three and a half length lead when she reached the 1:26.2 three-quarters. On top by two and a half lengths at when she turned for home, Jtlady Strong hung on gamely as the rest of the field sprinted down the stretch in her wake.
Summer Audit finished a half length back in second, Matriarch was three-quarters of a length to the rear in third, and fourth and fifth-place finishers Brigham Dream and Constance Hall were hot on their heels. Less than two lengths separated the winner from the fifth-place finisher.
Campbellville resident Norman Jones trains Jtlady Strong for his partners Elgin Strong of Oakville and John Toma of Mississauga. Through 21 starts the Angus Hall miss has recorded four wins, four seconds and three thirds.
Sunday’s elimination was only Jtlady Strong’s third start at the Gold Series level, and she will attempt to add a Gold Final trophy to her collection from Post 8 in the Sunday, Oct. 28 Gold Final. The remainder of the field will line up behind the Windsor Raceway starting gate as follows:
