CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Carolyn AS delivered her fourth straight winning effort to claim the two-year-old trotting filly Gold Final title at Mohawk Racetrack on Sunday evening.

Leaving from Post 6 with driver Steven Skilton in the race bike, Carolyn AS accelerated away from the starting gate and found herself to the outside of pacesetter Striking Pockets as the fillies cruised to a :28.3 opening quarter. Heading into the backstretch Skilton found a spot on the rail for the Striking Sahbra daughter and she was sitting third as Constance Hall led the fillies to a :58.1 half.

With Caught My Eye assuming command before the 1:28 three-quarters and Tymal Timeout and Corporate Girl marching up the outside, Carolyn AS was shuffled back to fifth heading around the final turn, but the traffic had cleared by the time the fillies straightened out for home, and Carolyn AS was able to overtake Constance Hall and Caught My Eye to score the half length victory in a personal best 1:57.3.

“I left with her hoping to follow the favourites,” said Skilton after the race. “I was a little concerned at the three quarter pole, but we got out and it all worked out.”

Skilton drives the filly for trainer Anette Lorentzon and owner ACL Stuteri Inc. of Paris, KY. The Hampton resident has driven the filly in all four of her victories, including a pair of wins in Grassroots action and last week’s triumph in her Gold Elimination debut.

“I got the drive by being in the right place at the right time,” noted Skilton. “I just really want to thank the connections for giving me the chance to drive her.”

Skilton and Carolyn AS will have an opportunity to earn a second Gold Final title when the fillies wrap up their regular season back at Mohawk Racetrack on Sept. 25. With a perfect 100 points earned in two Gold Series starts, Carolyn AS currently sits in fifth place in the race for a berth in the $300,000 Super Final on Oct. 14.

In addition to the talented two-year-old trotting fillies, Mohawk Racetrack fans were also treated to a pair of outstanding Gold Eliminations for the three-year-old pacing colts.

Mister Big and driver Phil Hudon delivered an impressive effort in the first $58,052 elimination, firing away from Post 4 to a :27.3 opening quarter and then sitting back and allowing fan favourite Mr Feelgood to carve out the :56 half and 1:24 three-quarters under heavy pressure from Secluded Island.

While the leaders battled around the final turn, Mister Big conserved energy before sprinting down the stretch to a one length victory in a personal best 1:51.2. Secluded Island finished second and Mr Feelgood settled for third.

“He’s been good all year,” said regular reinsman Hudon from the winner’s circle. “They’re just picking their spots with him. They’re keeping him brave.

“He paced good right through the wire tonight,” added the driver. “I think he can go with any one of them in the division.”

Hudon pilots Mister Big for trainer Timothy Pinske and the Pinske Stables of Plato, MN and Kentuckiana Racing Stable and Tom Crouch of Lexington, KY. Through nine starts this season the consistent Grinfromeartoear son boasts a record of two wins, one second, one third, four fourths and one fifth for earnings of $92,683.

Mister Big will take a run at the Gold Final title next Sunday, Sept. 3 from Post 4.

In the other elimination Stormaway defeated Doonbeg in a stirring finish that saw the colts thunder across the wire just a neck apart and five and three-quarter lengths ahead of third-place finisher Impeccable.

“I’m very happy with the way he raced tonight,” said trainer Dan Megens. “We thought there would be a lot of speed tonight, so we figured it would be a good time to try him from off the pace. I was very happy with his race.”

Handicapped by Post 9 and wanting to try out a come-from-behind strategy, driver Mark Megens settled Stormaway in sixth as Alastor Hanover and Paper Luck battled to a :26.3 opening quarter. Banana Joes Bar took over the lead heading for the :55.1 half, and as the field approached the 1:22.4 three-quarters, Megens sent Stormaway to the outside.

Circling three-wide around Impeccable, Stormaway was sitting just one and three-quarter lengths behind Banana Joes Bar as the colts turned for home, but Doonbeg was hot on his heels. The colts battled down the stretch, but Stormaway persevered to record his first victory since capturing the Gold Final at Western Fair Raceway on May 26.

Hamilton resident Dan Megens shares ownership on Stormaway with breeders Janice Van Nest of Hamilton and Peter Caetano of Ancaster. The Northern Luck son will try and make it two in a row from Post 8 in next weekend’s $130,000 Gold Final.
