SUDBURY, ON — Ontario’s three-year-old trotting colts make their second last regular season Grassroots start next Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Sudbury Downs, and trainer Paul Walker is hoping Catch My Korvette continues to benefit from the combination of grit and luck that has propelled him to the top of the division standings.

“He can’t maybe trot as fast as some, but he’s been pretty consistent when it comes to OSS races,” says Walker. “And he’s maybe been lucky too, drawing into easier divisions, but he doesn’t throw them away. He gets every bit he can.”

Since making his sophomore debut in the provincial program in June, Catch My Korvette has recorded three victories and one third-place finish for a total of 162 points. The Korvette Hanover gelding currently sits 12 points ahead of rival Keystone Saint, whose connections have opted not to make the trip to Sudbury next week.

Walker will pilot Catch My Korvette from Post 9 in Wednesday’s fourth race, and the Owen Sound resident is hoping the gelding can avoid the fate that befell him the last time they lined up in the trailing position.

“He’s only trailed one other time, and he made a break, so I don’t know if it’s the best spot for him,” explains the horseman. “But he’ll likely be all right.”

The young trotter heads into Wednesday’s start off a strong showing in the Aug. 31 Grassroots event at Grand River Raceway, where he hustled out of the advantageous Post 1 and controlled the fractions on the way to a two length victory in 2:01. The mile impressed Walker, who had avoided pushing the gelding for early speed last season, and had not had an opportunity to send him to the front this season.

“I’d never had an opportunity to leave with him much, because he’s been drawing outside posts, but last time he drew inside and he got out of there good and raced good,” notes Walker.

“Last year as a two-year-old he was a little head strong his first few starts, but we just kept him from charging out of there, and now this year he’s a really good little horse to race,” he adds.

While the word little’ may apply to Catch My Korvette’s physical stature, Walker says it has nothing to do with the tenacity the gelding brings to his work.

“He’s a small little guy, not very big, but he’s a determined horse,” says the trotting specialist. “He goes every race where he can go. There might be some faster, but he’ll beat every one he can.”

James MacLeod of Seaforth bred and owns Catch My Korvette, who amassed a record of four wins, two seconds, one third and earnings of $73,956 competing in the Gold Series as a two-year-old, and has racked up three wins, two seconds and $28,356 in the Grassroots program this season. A half-brother to $148,225 winner Concherer, Catch My Korvette may face a tougher test this week as he lines up against three other Grassroots division winners.

T Js Mr Lavec will lead Catch My Korvette off the gate from Post 1, while Mister Machine and Super Star K will have to overcome the outside Posts 7 and 8 to record their second Grassroots wins.

Post time at Sudbury Downs on Wednesday, Sept. 12 is 7:15 pm, with the three-year-old trotting colts providing the entertainment in Races 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8.
