DUNDAS, ON — Caught My Eye delivered an eye catching performance at Flamboro Downs on Saturday to post her third straight victory and claim the first two-year-old trotting filly Gold Final crown of the season.
Under direction from Hall of Fame horseman Bill O’Donnell, Caught My Eye landed third on the rail from Post 1 in the $130,000 contest. As Windsong Darling took the fillies to early fractions of :29.1 and :59.4 O’Donnell was content to sit in the middle of the pack with Caught My Eye, but when Tymal Timeout slipped up the outside to take the lead before the 1:30.2 three-quarters the veteran reinsman sent his filly after her.
Caught My Eye pressed the pace around the final turn and then kicked into overdrive in the stretch, sprinting home to a three-quarter length victory in 2:00.1. Wayne Henry trainees Tymal Timeout and Windsong Darling picked up second and third-place spoils.
Trainer Frank O’Reilly of Orton shares ownership on Caught My Eye with John Fielding of Toronto and John Ferguson of Windsor. The partners acquired the daughter of Angus Hall and Lookin At You Babe at last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale for $55,000, which she has repaid with interest after just three starts.
After a pair qualifiers in June, O’Reilly sent Caught My Eye to Sudbury Downs for her first start and the filly came home with a Trillium trophy and a 2:07.4 victory. In last week’s eliminations at Flamboro Downs the talented young trotter scored a 2:03.1 triumph, hitting the wire one and a quarter lengths ahead of the competition.
Fans sent Caught My Eye off as their second choice in Saturday’s Gold Final, behind Duchess Of York who finished fourth. Caught My Eye rewarded her supporters with a $7.00 win pay out, a $4.70 place dividend and a $3.10 return on each $2 show wager. Tymal Timeout, also an elimination winner last week, went off as the third choice and returned $4.70 to place and $3.30 to show. Third behind Caught My Eye for the second week in a row, sixth choice Windsong Darling paid $4.00 to show.
The Caught My Eye – Tymal Timeout exactor was worth $45.60 and the triactor returned $272.50.
Caught My Eye will have an opportunity to extend her win streak to four on July 16 when the two-year-old trotting fillies make their second Gold Series start at Windsor Raceway.
Ontario Sires Stakes excitement does not return to Flamboro Downs until Saturday, Aug. 5, when the Dundas half-mile plays host to the fourth Gold Series event for the outstanding three-year-old pacing fillies.
