SARNIA, ON — Hiawatha Horse Park fans decided Post 11 would not be a handicap for Chancey Lady in Thursday’s $107,798 Gold Elimination, and the two-year-old pacing filly proved them right as she sailed to an Ontario Sires Stakes record equalling 1:52.3 triumph.
Driver Mark MacDonald landed Chancey Lady in seventh in the early going, as Pondo Star and Voelz Hanover fought their way to an eyebrow raising :26 opening quarter. Once Voelz Hanover reached the front, driver Rick Zeron eased off on the accelerator and Shake That Junk sailed right on by, reaching the half in a comparatively sedate :56.3.
Heading to the halfway marker, MacDonald sent Chancey Lady to the outside behind former Gold Final winner Maddam Luck and rode that filly’s coat tails to the 1:25.1 three-quarters. As Maddam Luck started to stall, MacDonald sent Chancey Lady after the lead and the reigning Gold Final champion had one length on the field when she turned for home. A snappy :26.4 final quarter propelled the fan favourite down the stretch to a three length win in a sparkling 1:52.3.
The mile equalled the record set by Ontario Sires Stakes darling Odies Fame at Rideau Carleton Raceway in 1998, and demolished the Hiawatha track record by more than a second.
Voelz Hanover benefited from the pocket trip to finish second, while pacesetter Shake That Junk stayed game for third. The top nine finishers earned a return ticket to the Sarnia oval for next Thursday’s $130,000 Gold Final, the last regular season event on the fillies freshman schedule.
Mark MacDonald piloted Chancey Lady to her fourth straight win for trainer Casie Coleman and owner Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, BC. The daughter of Camluck and Art Of Design has only been bested once in her career, finishing fifth in her second lifetime start on Aug. 27 at Mohawk Racetrack.
The talented youngster, who was a $60,000 acquisition at the 2006 Lexington Select Yearling Sale, has two Gold Elimination trophies, a Gold Final crown, and a pair of overnight wins to her credit through six starts, and has earned $155,340.
