SARNIA, ON — Chancey Lady did not emerge onto the Ontario Sires Stakes scene until mid-September, but the two-year-old pacing filly has been flawless in three Gold Series starts and will be looking for a fourth in Thursday’s $130,000 Gold Final at Hiawatha Horse Park.
The precocious youngster matched the Ontario Sires Stakes record for freshman pacing fillies on a five-eighths mile track in last week’s elimination, and trainer Casie Coleman says the outstanding 1:52.3 mile was no accident.
“She for sure didn’t surprise me,” says Coleman, who trains the filly for Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, BC. “She’s never had a bad day yet.”
Coleman has adored the daughter of Camluck and Art Of Design since the first time she laid eyes on her last fall. Part of the Brittany Farms consignment, Chancey Lady went through the ring at the Lexington Select Sale last fall and was hammered down to Coleman and Jiwan for $60,000 US.
“She was a smaller filly, not over big, but she was built like a tank,” recalls Coleman. “Her conformation couldn’t be any better, and I really liked the way she moved over the ground. We got her for $60,000, but I was prepared to go higher.”
The Cambridge resident took her time educating Chancey Lady and building up the filly’s fitness level before sending her out to qualify at Mohawk Racetrack on July 27. Chancey Lady and driver Mark MacDonald won that qualifier in 1:58.3, and came back the next week with another winning effort in 1:58.1. The filly made her racing debut in a non-winners contest at Mohawk on Aug. 13, and sprinted home to a 1:56 triumph.
On Aug. 27 Chancey Lady and MacDonald suffered their only loss of the season, finishing fifth in a 1:53.3 mile, but they bounced right back the next week with a 1:54.1 score on the front end. In her provincial debut at Mohawk on Sept. 14, the filly rocked to a 10 length Gold Elimination win in 1:55.1 and then established herself as a division heavyweight with a 1:53.1 win in the Gold Final.
“We’ve never even asked her yet,” says Coleman. “Last week she came home in :26.4 and Mark said he never even spoke to her.”
Chancey Lady will defend her Gold Final title, and her four race win streak, from Post 1 in Thursday’s contest and Coleman says the track and Ontario Sires Stakes record could be under fire for a second week.
“She gets around a big track too, but because of her size she gets around those turns real good, she just flies around them,” says the 27 year old. “She’s small, but she’s long. She still wears a long hopple.”
As long as the filly remains healthy, Coleman and Jiwan intend to race her in the Nov. 10 Super Final, and then evaluate the possibility of taking a run at the top fillies in North America in the Breeders Crown.
“I honestly believe eight starts is plenty for a two-year-old, but it might be really hard to say, No,’ to the Breeders Crown if she keeps racing as good as she is,” reflects Coleman. “I think she’s the real deal.”
The first step down that road comes on Thursday night, however, and former Gold Final champions Shake That Junk and Maddam Luck will be doing their best to unseat Chancey Lady from Posts 3 and 5. The two-year-old pacing fillies face off in Race 8 on Hiawatha Horse Park’s Oct. 25 program, which gets under way at 7 pm.
