CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Mohawk Racetrack will be over run with two-year-old pacing fillies on Monday evening as the Campbellville oval plays host to the third of five Gold Series events for the talented young distaffers.
A total of 42 fillies will vie for just 10 spots in next week’s Gold Final, and trainer Tom Artandi is hoping Chillmetodbone can rise to the challenge in just her second start. After making her debut in the Gold Series season opener at Flamboro Downs on June 30 Chillmetodbone came up sick, so she missed the second event while a course of antibiotics and some time off helped return her to robust health.
“Last time she raced she was sick and it took me a while to get her over it,” explains Artandi. “But she seemed good in her qualifier.”
The veteran horseman, who trains Chillmetodbone for Alan Ward of Etobicoke, Karl Ungerman of Toronto, John Simmonds of King City and Ferdinand Monteleone of Pompano Beach, FL, prepped the filly for Monday’s test with a July 22 qualifier at Mohawk which saw her post a strong one length victory in 1:57.1.
“She’s trained back good since she qualified,” notes the Uxbridge resident, “So we’re hoping she can be in the top two.”
Artandi acquired the Astreos daughter, a half sister to $208,940 winner Allamerican Cane, last fall from breeder Chris Christoforou, Sr. and was impressed with Chillmetodbone during her winter lessons.
“She’s a great bodied filly, and had a good attitude about her,” he says of the young pacer. “She trained down good all winter.”
Chris Christoforou, Jr. drives the filly for Artandi and her ownership group, piloting her to a second place finish in her first qualifier on June 18, a fourth-place finish in the June 30 Gold Series elimination and to last week’s qualifying win. The Campbellville resident will go after a top two finish Monday from Post 6 in the last of four divisions.
“She can race either way. She has some gate speed to her so if he needs to use her leaving he can,” says Artandi. “I think she’ll be okay.”
Among the fillies Chillmetodbone will tackle in her return to the Gold Series are two-time Gold Elimination winner Draconian Promise from Post 1, two-time Grassroots division winner Teacher Supreme from Post 5 and Flamboro Downs Gold Elimination winner Don’t You Smile from Post 9.
Reigning Gold Final champion To Helen Back will begin defence of her title from Post 6 in the fifth race, while Bold Bidder, the winner of the season opening Gold Final, is handicapped for the second start in a row by the outside Post 10 in Race 2.
Mohawk Racetrack’s Monday Evening post time is 7:20 pm, with the two-year-old pacing fillies squaring off in Races 2, 3, 5 and 7. Only the top two finishers, plus two third-place finishers drawn by lot, will return to the Campbellville oval for the $130,000 Gold Final on Monday, Aug. 8.
