INNISFIL, ON — Uxbridge resident Dan Clements pushed his Grassroots Semifinal tally to four Saturday, piloting CMR Maybe Loaded and Banana Joes Bar to wins in the two-year-old pacing filly and pacing colt divisions at Georgian Downs.
The Georgian Downs regular made his first trip to the winner’s circle after he engineered a wire-to-wire victory for CMR Maybe Loaded in the fourth race. The Fully Loaded daughter dug in through the stretch to record the three-quarter length 1:57.4 victory over Back To Good and Teacher Supreme. Vals Joanie also advanced to next Saturday’s $100,000 Grassroots Final.
Clements drove CMR Maybe Loaded to her third win in seven starts for trainer Brett Robinson and owner-breeders CMR Farms of Hagersville.
The other freshman pacing filly Semifinal went to the talented Alias Seelster, who also controlled the pace from start to finish, hitting the wire one and a half lengths ahead of ICU Roller in 1:57.3. Pacific Yankee and Fantasy Winner finished well back of the leaders in third and fourth.
Denfield resident Ray Bunn trains former Gold Elimination winner Alias Seelster for his partner Lisa Steward of Denfield. Regular driver Michael Sumner was in the race bike for the Intrepid Seelster daughter’s fourth win of the season.
Clements was back in front of the Innisfil fans after Race 9 with pacing colt Banana Joes Bar, who circled the five-eighths oval in a smart 1:55.2, making up four lengths on fan favourite Winbak Noah through the stretch and then accelerating away to a four length victory. Winbak Noah settled for second, while Sudburysatrdaynite and King Joe were four more lengths back in third and fourth.
The win was the second straight for Banana Joes Bar, who is undefeated in Grassroots competition. Anthony Macri trains the Northern Luck son for Anne Della Maestra of Waterdown.
Underground King scored an upset over heavy favourite Acceptable Risk in the other pacing colt Semifinal, wresting control of the pace from the fan’s choice at the halfway marker and then digging in down the stretch to earn the nose victory in 1:56.2. Clean Cut Kid and Dreamluck finished behind Acceptable Risk in third and fourth.
Ray McLean, Jr. piloted the Apaches Fame son to the victory from Post 8 for trainer Bud Sinclair and owners Dr. Norman Amos of St. Marys, Bill Elliott of Thorndale and Murray Neilson of London.
The talented trotting fillies opened the second evening of Grassroots competition at Georgian Downs and Porsche Hall scored a popular victory in the first Semifinal. The Angus Hall daughter and trainer-driver Terry Kerr took quick command of the race from Post 1 and cruised home three and a half length winners in 2:01.2. C H Meadow Miss overcame Post 8 to earn the runner-up’s share of the $30,000 purse, while Party Hall and CS R Hope finished four more lengths back in third and fourth.
Bet Max Stables Inc. of Casco, MI and Benenati Inc. of Clinton Township, MI share ownership on Porsche Hall, who has three wins and one third to her credit through four starts.
Bernice Daniece stepped up from the back of the pack to claim the second trotting filly split in 2:02.2. Points leader Strikingly Luvable fended off Orillia Seelster for second, while Keystone Alberta was hot on their heels in fourth.
Gregg McNair trains Bernice Daniece for his mother, and the filly’s breeder, Gwendolyn McNair of Walkerton. The win over Ross Henry trainee Strikingly Luvable inched McNair closer to unseating Henry as the top trainer in the 2005 Ontario Sires Stakes program.
While the trotting fillies opened the evening with a pair of impressive performances, the trotting colts wrapped things up with two equally exciting battles.
Duke Of Connaught claimed his third victory with a 2:01 score in the first trotting colt Semifinal. The Striking Sahbra son got a flawless drive from Guy Gagnon that saw him tuck in behind pacesetter and fan favourite Jimmy Hill and then sprint down the stretch to claim the three and one-quarter length victory. The Orient Express and Su Lavec also closed hard to claim the second and third-place shares, while Jimmy Hill settled for fourth.
Ecuries Guy Gagnon Inc. and 172237 Canada Inc. of Gatineau, QC own Duke of Connaught, who has not missed a cheque through eight starts, while Richard Moreau trains the young trotter.
Division leader Potential Renegade polished off an outstanding evening of Grassroots action with an impressive 2:01.3 score from Post 7. The CR Renegade son and driver Ross Battin sat on the outside through the entire mile before accelerating down the stretch to the one and one-quarter length victory. Both Jazz Valley and Deputy Dylan trailed Potential Renegade up the outside into the $100,000 Final, while Armbro Delta saved ground on the rail and finished fourth.
Peter and Amy Clements of Dobbinton own Potential Renegade. Peter Clements bred and trains the gifted young trotter, whose only loss through nine starts came in an elimination of the Balanced Image Stake at Hanover Raceway on Sept. 17.
The top four finishers from each division will spend this week fine-tuning their game in preparation for Grassroots Championship night at Georgian Downs next Saturday, Oct. 15. A total of $800,000 will be on the line as the top two and three-year-old trotters and pacers battle in eight Grassroots Finals.
