REXDALE, ON — Both Trillium Series divisions gave Woodbine Racetrack fans a chance to get to their feet on Friday night, as the two-year-old trotting fillies fought down to the wire for a share of the $81,000 provincial purse.
In the first split Live In Love gave Toronto fans a glimpse of the hot early speed she employed in her runner-up performance in last Saturday’s Grassroots Championship. Starting from Post 2, the filly was two lengths on top at the :28.2 quarter and the :58.4 half. However, heading toward the 1:29.2 three-quarters, Arbor Hanover had clawed her way up the outside to within one-quarter of a length of the pacesetter.
Turning for home Arbor Hanover boasted a commanding three length lead, but down the stretch her long tour around the outside started to wear on the American-bred and fan favourite Delphic was able to snatch a neck victory in 1:59.1. Good Common Cents saved ground on the rail behind Live In Love and shook loose late to earn the third-place finisher’s share of the $40,719 purse.
Randy Waples piloted Delphic from Post 11 in the crowded field of freshman trotting fillies, landing her in the winner’s circle for the first time in nine attempts. Rene Laarman trains the Striking Sahbra miss for John Fielding and Jim Fielding of Toronto and Melvin Hartman of Ottawa. The group acquired the filly for $27,000 US at last fall’s Lexington-Selected Yearling Sale, and through one win, two seconds and one third, she has returned $62,027.
The second Trillium division saw Anklets Aweigh charge out to a :28.2 quarter and a :59 half before handing things over to fan favourite In Fine Form. On top by one length at the head of the lane, In Fine Form was unable to hold off the cavalry charge of fillies as they thundered down the stretch.
When the dust settled longshot Whatta Hotty was declared the winner by a neck over former Gold Final winner Torch in a time of 1:58.1. Grassroots Champion Travelin Supergirl finished third.
Keith Oliver engineered the upset for trainer Jim Whelan of Troy and his partners Terry Devos, Mary Devos and Clarence Devos of Langton. The partners also bred the Yankee Paco filly, who is out of $314,883 winner Our Kuli Girl, a seven time Ontario Sires Stakes winner in her freshman campaign seven years ago.
Friday’s win marked Whatta Hotty’s second visit to the winner’s circle this season, she also captured a Grassroots event at Hiawatha Horse Park on Sept. 20. Among the favourites in her Grassroots Semifinal, Whatta Hotty made a break at the quarter pole and failed to advance through to the Championship.
The two-year-old trotting fillies have two more Trillium Series events remaining, Nov. 16 at Rideau Carleton Raceway and Nov. 23 at Flamboro Downs. Woodbine Racetrack concludes its 2007 Ontario Sires Stakes season on Saturday, Nov. 10, hosting eight Super Finals worth a grand total of $2.4 million.
