CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Domitian Hanover has not missed a cheque since his first start and the consistent Camluck son stepped up on Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack to claim the last Gold Final title of the two-year-old pacing colt season.
As Phil Hudon and Test Flight fired to the front, Jody Jamieson eased Domitian Hanover off the starting gate from Post 4 and into sixth-place on the rail. Through the :27.2 opening quarter and the :55.4 half Jamieson and Domitian Hanover sat tight, but as Sipwiththepres hit the three-quarters in 1:24.2 Jamieson pointed the young pacer to the outside and started to reel in the front runners.
Shaking free of traffic in the stretch Domitian Hanover sprinted away from the field to a 1:52.3 triumph, in spite of a sloppy track rated two seconds slower than normal.
Gold Comet also closed well to finish three and a half lengths behind the winner in second and fan favourite Sergei Seelster survived a first over trip to be third.
James Friday’ Dean trains Domitian Hanover for Clay Harland Horner and Scott Horner of Toronto. The pair acquired the half-brother to $517,586 winner Union Guy at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale for $30,000 US, and Saturday’s triumph boosted the colt’s freshman earnings to $157,416 and earned him a berth in the $300,000 Super Final at Woodbine Racetrack on Oct. 14.
The win, the colt’s third in nine starts, also lowered Domitian Hanover’s personal best by almost four seconds.
The $130,00 Gold Final was bookended by a pair of Gold Eliminations for the three-year-old pacing colts and Eagle Luck captured his second elimination trophy with a gate-to-wire effort in 1:52.
The Camluck colt and driver Luc Ouellette coasted through fractions of :26.4, :56.1 and 1:24.3 before sprinting home to the one length decision over Mister Big and Dodgeball. Fourth and fifth-place finishers Windsong Cruiser and Armbro Domi also advanced to next Friday’s $130,000 Gold Final.
Guelph resident Gregg McNair trains Eagle Luck for Frank Dettore of North Ridgeville, OH. Through 19 starts this season the consistent pacer has posted eight wins, one second and two thirds for earnings of $371,365.
The second Gold Elimination heralded the return to Ontario Sires Stakes action of Little Brown Jug winner Mr Feelgood, but the Jimmy Takter trainee settled for fifth as Mark Megens and division leader Stormaway stole the victory.
Leaving from Post 4 Megens engineered fractions of :28.3, :58.2 and 1:26.3 for former Gold Final champion Stormaway and then shouted, Catch me if you can,’ as he turned for home. Although Doonbeg employed his usual finishing kick, he could not get nearer than a length to Stormaway, who ran off with his third Gold Elimination victory in 1:53.1.
Jersey Dan was another length back in third, with Secluded Island and Mr Feelgood rounding out the qualifiers for next Friday’s Gold Final.
Hamilton resident Dan Megens trains Stormaway for his partners, and the colt’s breeders, Janice Van Nest of Hamilton and Peter Caetano of Ancaster. Through 18 starts the talented Northern Luck son has recorded 13 wins, two seconds and one third for earnings of $319,906. Unfortunately the pacer will be handicapped by Post 10 in next week’s Final, while Eagle Luck, Mr Feelgood and Doonbeg benefit from Posts 2, 5, and 6 respectively.
