CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — When B Cor Rennegade rolls up behind the gate for Monday night’s Gold Final at Mohawk Racetrack, Jean Brechkow knows her family in Australia will be waiting anxiously to hear the results of the $130,000 contest.
“I had my brother and sister-in-law over from Australia (this summer). And it worked out that they got to see a lot of Ontario going to stake races,” explains Brechkow. “When I got home, very late, from Mohawk after his last race, there was already an email from my brother because he had pulled the results up on the Standardbred Canada Web site. He’s right into watching and reading all the Canadian stuff now.”
Brechkow’s brother was emailing congratulations after B Cor Rennegade captured his Sept. 26 Gold Elimination with a smart come from behind effort that saw him hit the wire a half length ahead of the competition in 1:59.2. It was the CR Renegade son’s second straight victory and his second Gold Elimination win in a season that has seen him craft a record of three wins, one second and one third in seven starts.
“We just have to keep our fingers and toes crossed that everything continues to go well for him,” says Brechkow, who shares ownership on the gelding with trainer Garth Gordon of Guelph, Bobby Brown of Kingsville and James Walker of Port Perry.
The partners acquired B Cor Rennegade for $9,000 at last fall’s Canadian Classic Yearling Sale and it was Brechkow who suggested that Gordon take a look at the youngster. The Amherstburg resident had owned a distant relative of the gelding’s in the early 1980’s and had continued to follow the Armbro Jen bloodline through the next four generations.
“I didn’t go to the sale, but I said to Garth, Take a look at hip number 74, or something like that, and see what you think of him,'” she recalls. “So he called me from the sale and said, Yeah, he’s a nice colt. He’s a little bit back on his knees and a little sickle hocked, but I think we should maybe take a poke at him.'”
After sailing through his early lessons, B Cor Rennegade captured his June 28 qualifier in 2:01.1 and earned himself a shot at the Gold Series season opener on June 28 at Georgian Downs, where he posted a 2:00.2 victory. A runner-up finish established the gelding as a player on the freshman trotting colt scene, but he struggled through his next two Gold Series starts, finishing sixth in the July 22 and August 21 eliminations and failing to advance to either Final.
A third-place finish in Glidemaster’s track record mile at Mohawk on Aug. 30 marked a return to form for B Cor Rennegade, and he captured his Champlain Stakes division in a personal best 1:57.1 one week later. Last Monday’s elimination win was the youngster’s second in a row and boosted his season earnings to $118,669.
“I have to give a lot of credit to Cindy Rapson, who has worked with Garth for years. She’s just unbelievable with young horses. She allows him to be silly, but she also makes him listen,” notes Brechkow. “Really all of the credit goes to three people. Bill Core for breeding him, and Garth and Cindy for doing such a great job.”
B Cor Rennegade will make his bid for a Gold Final trophy from Post 5 in Monday’s sixth race. Post time for the first race at Mohawk Racetrack is 7:20 pm.
