SARNIA, JULY 11, 2006 — When she arrives at Hiawatha Horse Park on Saturday, three-year-old pacing filly Draconian Promise will be looking to score her first win of the season in the second of two $34,198 Trillium Series divisions.

Second in a track record Gold Final at Windsor Raceway on July 9 and in her Gold Elimination the week before, the filly seems to be rounding into form after getting off to a slow start.

“She raced really good the other night,” says trainer Jason McGinnis of the filly’s runner-up finish in the track record 1:51.3 mile. “She had a good trip, but it was probably the quickest mile she’s ever paced.”

McGinnis attributes the filly’s recent success — she was also second in a Gold consolation at Mohawk Racetrack on June 18 — to an easing of the allergy problems that plagued her through two fifth and one sixth-place finish at the start of her sophomore season.

“She had a lot of allergy trouble earlier in the year, but the last couple starts she seems to be coming around,” says the Ancaster resident. “Hopefully she can stay good.”

Draconian Promise will take a run at the Hiawatha winner’s circle from Post 2 in the tenth race and McGinnis expects the Rustler Hanover daughter will find both the post and the five-eighths mile oval to her liking.

“She likes to leave pretty good,” notes the trainer, who trains Draconian Promise for Cully Keetch and Lawrence Simon of Hamilton. “And it’s the same size track as Windsor, and she got around there pretty good, so it shouldn’t bother her.”

McGinnis says the filly, who won two Gold Eliminations and a Trillium event as a two-year-old, recovered well from her big effort at Windsor on Sunday and adds that her training program will be quite light through the remainder of the month.

“They come right back in six days again next week for the Canadian Breeders. When they are racing every week they don’t need to train a whole lot,” he explains. “That was a pretty fast mile, but she seems to have bounced out of it really good. Hopefully she can stay as good as she has been her last few starts and get a good piece of it Saturday.”

Among the fillies that Draconian Promise will face on Saturday is Ja El Astrelegant who bested her in the season opening Trillium event at Grand River Raceway on June 5. Ja El Astrelegant will start from Post 3 in the eight filly field, which is comprised of four Grassroots regulars, two Gold Series heavy weights and a pair of American-bred fillies eligible to the Trillium Series through their 100 per cent Ontario ownership.

Post time at Hiawatha Horse Park on Saturday is 7:30 pm, with the three-year-old pacing fillies slated to do battle in Races 7 and 10. The evening also features two divisions of the C.K.G. Billings Amateur Driving Series in Races 2 and 4.
