INNISFIL, ON — Freshman trotting filly Ena Jane used Post 1 to her advantage on Saturday evening at Georgian Downs, cruising along on the front end to a Grassroots victory in 2:00.4.

The win was the quickest of four Grassroots divisions at the Innisfil oval on Saturday, and marked a personal best for Ena Jane. Dave Boughton piloted the Duke Of York daughter to the two and a half length victory over Tameka Seelster and Debt Reduction for owner and trainer Frank Szasz of Bolton.

Szasz acquired the filly for just $3,000 at last fall’s Canadian Open Yearling Sale and the young trotter has already earned $13,111 in just two starts.

My Pen Pal also recorded a front-end victory from Post 1 on Saturday, hitting the wire one length up on Condi Lane and Zorgwijk Intimate in 2:02.1.

Arthur resident Trevor Henry guided My Pen Pal to the win for his partner and brother, trainer Wayne Henry of Arthur, James Laverty of Sauble Beach and Ron Waples of Guelph. The daughter of Striking Sahbra and Meadowbranch Quill was a $16,000 purchase from last fall’s Forest City Yearling Sale.

The other two division winners opted for come-from-behind tactics. Aaron Byron piloted Dr Sparky to an impressive 2:02.3 victory in the first $26,222 Grassroots division, sprinting from fifth at the top of the stretch to claim the one length victory over Countess Stormont and Quintessential K.

Karel Laarakkers of Sunderland owns and trains Dr Sparky, a daughter of Dr Ronerail and Meadowbranch Iza he acquired for a mere $2,500 at the Canadian Open sale.

Trainer Mark Steacy also used an off the pace strategy with Travelin Supergirl in the fifth race. Starting from the outside Post 9, the Lansdowne resident eased Travelin Supergirl off the starting gate into fifth, and was shuffled as far back as seventh through the mile. Turning for home the pair had worked their way up to fourth and an impressive finishing kick propelled the filly to a neck victory in 2:01.2.

Travelin Supergirl, runner-up Ms Naughty, and third-place finisher Charming Oaks are all members of the first crop of sire Kadabra.

Peter Heffering of Port Perry bred and owns Travelin Supergirl, who is a daughter of $298,351 winner Travelin Superlite.

Ontario’s talented two-year-old trotting fillies will further develop their Grassroots rivalry on Aug. 6 at Dresden Raceway, while Georgian Downs fans are treated to Gold Final action from the cream of the freshman trotting filly crop this Tuesday, July 24.
