CAMPBELLVILLE, ON — Sloppy conditions at Mohawk Racetrack on Friday evening did not spoil the show put on by Ontario’s precocious two-year-old pacing fillies in a trio of $39,182 Gold Eliminations.
In spite of a track rated three seconds slower than normal, first time Gold Series starter Voelz Hanover matched her personal best with an impressive 1:53.4 score in the third division. Trainer Rick Zeron floated the Astreos daughter off the starting gate from Post 3 and into second spot on the rail behind early pacesetter Lilbitfasternow, who led the fillies to a :27.3 opening quarter.
Zeron sent Voelz Hanover after the lead before the half and the pair were two lengths on top when the teletimer ticked off :55.1. Still two lengths the best at the 1:23.4 three-quarters, Voelz Hanover sailed home a three and three-quarter lengths winner over fan favourite Gold Not Silver. Lilbitfasternow shadowed Voelz Hanover to a third-place finish, seven and three-quarter lengths to the rear, and reigning Gold Final champion Shake That Junk was two more lengths back in fourth.
R. Berthiaume Inc. of Montreal, QC owns Voelz Hanover, a half-sister to $571,206 winner Northern Sun. The filly was a relatively modest $27,000 US purchase at last fall’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale and has already earned $81,144 with five wins, one second, one third and one fifth in eight starts.
Chancey Lady also delivered an exceptional effort over the off track in her first Ontario Sires Stakes start. With Mark MacDonald in the race bike, Chancey Lady eased off the gate into seventh and then took over complete control of the race, accelerating away to a 10 and one-quarter length victory in 1:55.1. U Make Me Laugh and Enniscrone rounded out the top three in the second Gold Elimination.
A $60,000 US yearling at the Lexington-Select Sale, Chancey Lady is owned by Niele Jiwan of Burnaby, BC and trained by Casie Coleman. The daughter of Camluck and Art Of Design made her racing debut at Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 13 and has scored three wins and one fifth in her brief four race career.
The other Gold Elimination saw a trio of longshots cruise across the wire in the top three spots. Style Semalu got a head in front of Designated Leader to claim the 1:58 victory and Envy was just one quarter length behind the leaders in third. Heavy favourite All Accounted For was only a length and a quarter back, but had to settle for fifth.
The win was the third straight for Style Semalu, who came into Friday’s contest off a pair of victories at Hippodrome de Montreal. Pierre Touchette trains the Million Dollar Cam daughter for breeders Semalu Inc. and Zoom And Fish Stable Inc. of Laval, QC, and the Vaudreuil, QC resident opted to skip the August Gold Series event over Grand River Raceway’s half-mile oval in favour of competition closer to home. Through seven starts the talented young pacer now has four wins and one second.
